Default Wine! All things wine

I think we need a wine thread. There is one for beer and scotch, but those of us who drink the most civilized hooch have nothing. Recommendations, great deals, a great wine you just discovered should all go in here. Tips on obtaining wines from USA, etc. So, for example, when Costco had Opus One at $100 off, this would have been a great place to post it. Also, corkage fees at various restaurants.

I know a guy who imports wine, particularly German wines, into Calgary. He's been able to bring in the best Riesling I've ever had in my life:

If you see this anywhere, GET IT.

I'll be honest; I know nothing about wine other then which one is red, pink or white. This summer I really started drinking more reds . My dad got me hooked on this one:

Spoiler!

To me it tastes great. It's one of my go to drinks now. The lady at the liquor store even says it's her favorite. Maybe everyone else hates it? But I love this stuff.

I'm a noob when it comes to wine, so I'll be looking for some good tips in this thread.

As far as countries go for red I would say...

Argentina > Italy > Chile > Australia > France > United States > Canada

And whites well, ewww, but

Italy > Australia > Germany > United States > Canada.

Not that I'm saying Canadian wine is crap or anything, but outside a few Okanagan and a couple Niagra wines it's mostly cheap stuff.

OK, Casillero is horrible. However, that's not really fair. It's a classic starter wine - the first half-decent wine you drink before you discover actually good stuff. I started with it myself back in the 90s because it was basically the only reasonably priced wine available in Moscow restaurants when I was working there in 95-96.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as I would go US-Chile-Italy-Ausralia-Canada-etc. I personally cannot stand French wine for the most part, even the very expensive, but I love California wines. Canada wines are generally overpriced, but there are some gems.

BTW the lowest corkage fee I have seen so far is $15 at Tango Bistro (part of the Smugglers group).

Finally! I was waiting for some other wino to start this thread.

I spend summers drunk in Kelowna and from what I can remember my favourite vineyard/winery is Edge of the Earth somewhere in the hills around Armstrong. They don't sell in liquor stores so you have to go there or order on line. But it's ten bucks a bottle. Or a hundred bucks a case. And really really good. Held its own at a table of snobs. They literally slap the labels on in their garage while you hang out in their front yard with their dog and a bottle of blush.

Their best is an unknown varietal they planted twenty years ago they've named Argus. It was a clipping they swiped from Grey Monk and it is so far unrecognizable to viniculturalists in the area. They have a bear that guards the grapes from the deer all summer but as payment he usually wipes out a row or two just before harvest. Last year he chose the Argus grapes. So it was in short supply and gone until the 2018 bottles are released.

Their White Malbec is also good.

Another fav is...Rhymes with Door Hinge from The Hatch. It's a unique style of wine...orange...that you won't see very often...

https://thehatchwines.com/product/rh...-hatch-orange/

I might add some more as memories return.

Edge of the Earth - what is it - merlot, pinot?
The weirdest wine I have liked way more than expected was pinot noir from Bob McCown's winery Stoney Ridge in Niagara.

That's just the name of the winery...they're so far off the path they called themselves Edge of the Earth. You want the Argus from them when it comes out in May.

Costco is the top wine ditributor in the world and has great prices. They carry some of the best wines in the world - Joseph Phelps Insignia, Opus One, Caymus, they had Chateau Margeaux Premiere Grand Cru and Pessac Leognan premier Grand Cru. If you go to a fully stocked Costco in the US, the price and selection are incredible.

Someone told me the same thing; that it was a starter wine. Therefore, I started

We usually get Apothic red/dark/whatever other red one they come out with. It's probably the Budweiser of wines but it's tasty and goes down easy once the kids are asleep. Also indirectly responsible for our second child.

I've got into wines about 7 years ago. I get my deals through Hightlander's weekly emails that go out. You can a lot of wines at 50% off, often wines around the 50-60 dollar price range.

I'm personally big on pinots from France and Oregon.

Looking forward to seeing a lot of good deals and ideas posted in this thread.

What are the favourite shops in town? I stick to Richmond Hill and Metrovino for the most part and pop into Costco once in a while.
