Kerr and Steinberg saying that they have learned that the Flames were targeting Ian Cole at the draft at one point.

Brassard @ $4.1M for 2018 1st (will be very late), Gustavsson + Cole (UFA)

You have a career 50pt center vs a 55pt winger. Centers are worth more, however Hoffman has an extra year on his contract ($5.1M) which is valuable.
I'm willing to bet that their returns are going to be very similar. Hoffman might return a little less if Ottawa doesn't retain.
Not saying we should or shouldn't trade for him, but Calgary's offer would need to resemble:
Hoffman (no retention) for 2nd,3rd, Kylington

Done and done. if that were the realistic price tag. I mean it's not way off but the prospect would probably be one of the better ones. Talking Andersson/Fox.

I woild have preferred Cole over Hamonic at last year's draft. Cole-Brodie would be a solid second pair and wouldn't cost us our first + 2 seconds.

I don't get the hate Cole seems to get at times ~ I know numbers aren't everything but strictly looking at his HDB page and he's had a steady last few years with that amazing Pens club; good playoff numbers too and above 50 % CF in his career.

The option I wouldn't have minded was Demers - but only since the acquisition cost was so low. Pretty much cost a Stajan equivalent.
Also been relatively above water on that horrible Coyotes team. Ranks 14th in the league in relative corsi even though he's getting tough matchups and more defensive zone starts. His shots against per 60 with him on the ice would actually rank 3rd on the Flames behind only Gio and Hamilton.
Hamonic vs Demers + the ability to use the 1st and 2 2nds on a different asset would have been an improvement to me.

I pass. I think Bennett's offensive upside might not quite be Galy's but the hard nosed way he plays the game tips the scales for me.

I mentioned on Fireside Chat this week that I'd be targeting Tatar if I was GM. I think he'd fit in well here.

I don’t know. If he comes cheap I suppose but he doesn’t do much for me. 2nd liner but not an upgrade on Frolik which is what I hope the Flames get

Tatar loves scoring on his off-wing (he's a lefty)
I'd be all over a deal for Tatar

Just for reference:
Mike Hoffman - 28 year old LW (PP specialist from the RW), shoots left, 2 years left at $5.19M- 16G + 23A = 39 pts in 60 games
- 26G + 35A = 61 pts in 74 games last year
Mats Zuccarello - 30 year old RW/LW, shoots left, 1 year left at $4.5M- 10G + 32A = 42 pts in 60 games
- 15G + 44A = 59 pts in 80 games last year
Andrew Shaw - 26 year old RW, shoots right, 4 years left at $3.9M- 10G + 9A = 19 pts in 43 games
- 12G + 17A = 29 pts in 68 games last year
Tomas Tatar - 27 year old LW/RW, shoots left, 3 years left at $5.3M- 16G + 11A = 27 pts in 60 games
- 25G + 21A = 46 pts in 82 games last year
I'd also be interested in:
Gustav Nyquist - 28 year old LW (also C/RW), shoots left, 1 year left at $4.75M- 16G + 12A = 28 pts in 60 games
- 12G + 36A = 48 pts in 76 games last year
Brendan Gallagher - 25 year old RW, shoots right, 3 years left at $3.75M- 21G + 15A = 36 pts in 60 games
- 10G + 19A = 29 pts in 64 games last year

Not really interested in a 5'10, 185lb left shooting LW (Tatar) that's going to cost assets to bring in. Seems like impulse buying. Seems like a lateral move.
Unless there's a clear upgrade that fits an actual need, would rather stand pat.

To me, you can never have too much skill. While ideally I'd bring in skilled guys over 6'2", if they're resilient for the playoffs, can take a hit, and 5'10", bring them in. The old days of pure "truculence" without skill is almost over. Tatar and Zuccarello would be good choices. Gallagher while an agitator is simply inconsistent game to game in the playoffs and Shaw is simply a grinder, so no to both.
