Default Hurricane Fiona - Updates

A huge Hurricane is on its way for us in Atlantic Canada. I think some of our friends in NS have already been impacted by it and are without power. Experts are saying that Fiona could be Canada's strongest-ever storm...

We can use this thread to post updates (if possible) as the storm rolls through but it's gonna be a doozy!

Good luck to those of you facing this tonight. I hope you've all got someone good to ride it out with and it ends up being more fun memories than frightening ones.

It's really gaining power and size as it travels. Be prepared for the worst. Get all projectile objects out of your area. Invest in a generator (if gas powered, ensure that it's well away from the home to avoid CO poisoning). Buy extra flashlights/lanterns, bottled water, and non-perishable food. Eat up the stuff in the fridge now.

I've been through a few of these. If anyone needs any advice, please ask.

Thanks folks. I'm right in the middle of the anticipated track of the storm.

All the patio furniture is in. Gutter and downspouts all revamped and divert water way away from the house. Flashlights are charged, food and supplies are purchased.

My plan is to take some videos, and such.

Things are closing already, stuff for next week being rescheduled.

Fingers crossed for smooth sailing.

Having been through a couple of these things myself, I can only agree with Cali and his recommendations.

The only thing I would add is that you simply cannot have enough water in reserve. We lost power and water for 4 or 5 days the first time and water was by far the one thing that matters most. Fill bathtubs with it, get as much bottled stuff as you can, and then get some more.

Stay safe to all of you facing this monster.....its sheer size is amazing.

Listen to Frankie. He'll be right in the middle of it.

Stay warm, dry and safe, Atlantic Canada.

Stay safe, be careful.

I read that they expect massive power outages that will last a long time because of the wind and danger to crews.

I've only been through one hurricane and ones another.

The webcams bring back memories of being in NS and PEI less than a month ago. Hoping everyone and everything makes it through this fine. Stay safe Maritimes friends.

Our power was already out earlier this morning for 30 minutes. Everything is either put away or strapped down. Propane and gas cans filled, generator is ready. I filled the trailer fresh water tank and charged it's battery. As prepared as we can be.

As it is still the "calm" before the storm (raining pretty hard right now but not much wind yet), my 9 year old daughter Fiona is thrilled the storm is named after her. Hopefully we make it through pretty much unscathed and she feels the same way next week.

My daughter was born during Hurricane Irma 5 years ago (that massive Cat 5 hurricane). People kept joking that we should have named her "Irma", but I cannot think of a worse name to give a child. At least Fiona is a pretty name. I wanted to make her middle name "stormborn", but my wife wasn't having it.

i noticed one of the webcams is of a yacht club, and there were no yachts in camera view.

what do you do with a yacht during a weather event like this?

i spoke with a co-worker in our halifax office and he tells me it is curently raining hard there. They went to the grocery stroe yesterday and it was busy.

Drive it out of the path of the storm or into a sheltered water break.

We live in the same place. I've known him LONG before he became internet famous.

Hell of a good dude. Always greets me the same way "Hi Jon. I'm doing good." Before going into whatever is in his mind.

His knowledge of weather and geography is so good its frightening.

So who is volunteering to be lashed to their house wearing a Go-Pro?

This is pretty cool. Saildrone deployed into the hurricane and sending back footage.

Not a nice day to be on the water.

My experience is solely based on watching a ton of sailing YouTube videos over the past years:
- get it “on the hard” (aka land) and have it lashed down a ton.
- move it to inland waters (river, etc) that are more protected and lash down a ton.
- go out on anchor, in a more protected area, on a ton of chain, and ride it out. There is SA Canadian guy who has a YouTube channel who rode out a cat 5 storm last year in Columbia at anchor.

Marinas seem to be the equivalent of trailer parks for boats.
