That’s something my brother suggested. You don’t want to make it too big so you can’t get the threads to grip.

He also suggested a drill press as the best option. Maybe try Protospace. They open on Tuesday and have the tools and guidance on how to use them.

I am curious as to the need for perfection.

Perfection is needed for the 90-degree angle. This disk is used as a clamp protecting paper labels on vinyl records during washing in a special machine. It screws on top of the rotating threaded spindle in the centre of the washing platter. If the thread is even a hair off 90-degrees, the clamp will screw in a bit crookedly and will leave a gap for the washing liquid to get under it and damage the label.

Are there other threaded inserts available in the original size?

If it is really that important to be at a near perfect 90 degree angle, I’d definitely be taking it to a machine shop...

Take it to a machine shop. They’ll probably do it in about 15 seconds and charge less than any tools, bits, etc you have to buy.

Well, to put a closure on the thread, for those how are curious, this was my setup:

This is after the first 8mm and 11mm drilling (edges look a bit rough, but that's not a concern yet):

Then after putting epoxy glue on the insert and letting it sit for a few minutes, I've slowly threaded it right on the spindle of the machine, so that when the glue hardens, it sets the insert in a right angle position. Hopefully, this should do the trick. Thanks for the advice, gents.
