Parsons opens up on mental health (TheAthletic)
https://theathletic.com/537582/2018/...ally-spoke-up/
Wow what a great read, and very surprising, to me at least.
For those who don't subscribe, Tyler Parsons, at the end of this past season was not feeling like himself and his mom convinced him not to fly to Calgary for development camp. He reached out to the Flames and now in a relatively short period of time he's back on track and feeling better than ever. The article goes into much more detail obviously.
Quote:
“He goes, ‘I have to go, Mom,'” said Kim. “I said, ‘I don’t care. You’re not going. Call the guys who sent you the ticket and leave them a message that you’re not getting on a plane.’ That’s exactly what we did. I called the (Flames) and said, ‘I’m not putting him on a plane … when he’s feeling like this. And then for him to be in a hotel room by himself for a week? No.’ We turned around and we went home.

Glad he opened up about this, and really cool to see that he's reaching out to tell more. So often that kind of behaviour is just labelled as a 'funk' and pushed aside.

Almost mandatory though. You cant go it alone. As soon as he told someone, in this case his mom, people understood, which is also grounds for applause.
You know, I have to imagine that being a pro-athlete isnt easy. Lots of pressure constantly. It might become easier once you're established and have a place and a contract, but being a pro-prospect has to be intensely rough on your mind.
I'd hope that the mentality of teams and organizations understand that. These are kids fighting for their futures and their dreams.
I'm glad the Flames were supportive.
I often love the hockey/human side of this organization, I wish I could love the business side as well.

What a tremendous article by Cruikshank. I really hope things work out for Parsons. Seems like a great kid and a great, caring family.

Telling someone is key.
Even if it's isn't all that big of a deal. I always tell my daughter not to let something bounce around in your head. Getting picked on, worried about a presentation in junior high, made a mistake you feel bad about ... tell someone.
You activate different parts of your brain when you verbalize a problem. It always seems smaller.

Looks like the story is unlocked. Good on the Athletic for making this available to anyone it might help.

His step-dad sounds like an awesome dude. I'd love to have a beer with him.

The Athletic has done a tremendous job with these stories on mental illness effecting athletes. Very happy Parsons is adressing these issues now early in his career, such problems are very hard to come to terms with. If you don’t suffer with these disorders it can be very hard for you to truly understand what someone’s mind can go through on a daily basis. It’s articles like this one and the one on Lehner earlier this month that break down barriers. Open dialogue within families and communities regarding mental illness needs to be encouraged! It shows great maturity to not only get help for his issues but to be open about it with the public, well done Parsons!

Weird. I actually went to view one of the development camp ice times and saw him there with my own eyes. He didn’t take part, but was definitely there watching.
I haven’t read the whole article, but was this maybe the 2017 development camp that this article is referring to?

Nope, he attended the camp but did not take part in on ice sessions. Thats what they are referring to.

This makes me think what would have happened if Dan Ryder got some help before he went off the rails.
Parrsons talked about not even be in pro hockey if he didn't seek help.
