The extra greasy part is that the two rinks are pretty much identical but they were asking $200,000 for Messier naming rights and $125,000 for Murray.

It's like they just decided to hit up Messier for more money because they knew he made more.

The city officials must have backed down because the arenas are still named Messier and Murray.

I think corporate sponsors stepped up. I remember Troy Murray was pretty much saying that's the type of salary he made a year when he played. No way he could afford to pay that.

The mayor apologized and the city backed down after they realized they looked foolish.

It's actually St Albert and not Edmonton but I digress. Why would it bother Edmontonians, Oiler fans, (or people in the metro Edmonton area)? That's where Iggy's from, Oiler fans won't have any objections to that.

Exactly, and I mean Edmontonian's would hate much ado about the Flames, but Iginla's recognition also comes from the national team.
Talk to almost any Oiler fan, and they'll say they hate the Flames, but have a respect/admiration of Iginla.

I guess if McDavid were from 20 minutes up the road in Airdre the situations would be comparable.

News Update

Akinsdale Arena in St. Albert will be renamed the Jarome Iginla Arena on Aug. 25, the City of St. Albert said Monday.

Iginla, 42, will be joined at Sunday's name-change ceremony by friends, family, St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron and members of council.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the arena located at 66 Hebert Rd.

There will be a free barbecue, a street hockey game and a public skate.

Edmonton has speed traps everywhere.

However I have heard that they will waive any tickets if you show them your mullet.

Will say again, emphatically, that St. Albert is not Edmonton.

I will be attending in flames silks! Looking forward to it, though I am also standing in a wedding the day before so I may not be feeling so excellent/ happy on the day of the event lol.
