E-Reader - suggestions

Figured I would start a new thread, instead of bumping really old threads.

I am looking to replace my old Kobo E-Reader.

Looking online all of the recommendations seem to focus on Kindle products.

Has anyone purchased an E-Reader lately?

What is recommended?

Figured, I would ask before I ran out bought what the store recommends.

I don't know the whole array, but when it was time to replace my kindle I switched to a kobo because taking books out of the library is excellent. That was last summer and I use mine a lot I would say.

I prefer Kobo myself. I have the Glo because I read mostly at night and it is backlit.

I have a Kobo Aura and I like it well enough, the eInk screen wasn't as good as the Kindle's screen when I bought it, but it's still very readable.

Both Kindle and Kobo have gone through some iterations since then but from what I understand the Kindle screens are still superior. Would be worth trying both before making a purchase. EDIT: Staples used to have the Kindle in the stores, not sure if they still do.

I've also read that the software for the Kobo is very inferior, I use Calibre to manually manage mine and I haven't used it to get ebooks from the library so not sure about that part.

Down side with Kindle is the DRM and tight binding to Amazon.

I love my Kobo, had a Kinde in the past, but I prefer the Kobo as it reads more formats than the Kindle.

I use a Kindle Paperwhite, and I absolutely love the frontlight on it. The speed of the system and clarity of the text (my biggest gripes about the Kobo) are definite selling points. Being locked into Amazon's ecosystem is definitely a drawback if you want to use services like the Library's e-book rentals. Myself, I've gotten comfortable using Calibre to manage my books from my PC with no real issues. It handles converting other formats to Amazon's just fine.

Calibre with the DRM removing tool is a must for ebooks if you want to avoid world destroying anger.

Love my Kindle. Don't mind buying books versus using the library feature. Best feature is sometimes will procrastinate at work and start reading book reviews on amazon and if I finally like the sound of the book, I can click one button to buy the book and then have it auto-upload on my kindle at home.

I have a Kindle Voyage and I love it. If you use Goodreads then there's really good integration between that site and the device.

The Voyage is $300 but it might not be worth the cost over something like the Paperwhite. It has an adaptive backlight which I like.

If you have/keep a Kobo, and you have Aeroplan, buy your books through Kobo's Aeroplan store link - 5 points per dollar spent. Some of my book purchases earn more miles than a flight to LA.

I've been using a Kobo Aura, pretty happy with it. I like that it has really good control over font size, as well as not being locked into one seller's ecosystem. If I do see a really good deal on a book I want through Amazon that isn't matched elsewhere I use Calibre with the Apprentice Alf tools to convert.
