Default LF: Home Office Printer

I need to replace my home printer.

Need the following features:
Color / BW Print
Copy
Scan
Fax (I know right !!!)

11 x 17 would be an asset but not necessary.

Will be used by 4 laptops running Win 7 or greater.

I realize home printers are throwaway units but I wouldn't mind not having to throw way the next one for a while.

Suggestions ? Thanks.

First you should decide laser or inkjet.

For any business applications I think laser is the only way to go. If you need photo capability then you should go inkjet.

I picked up a Samsung 1860 colour laser last year on sale for $150, normally 700 at the time. Its clunky sounding and not that fast, but was a great deal. The colour toner cost about $300 though to replace, but it will probably last me the life of the printer.

Why not both? That's the route I took. I personally use both a Brother MFC and a Canon MFC side by side.

Cost per page black and white on a laser printer is way cheaper than black and white on color printer.

Canon has some MFC (imageCLass) which meet all the criteria of OP at about $250 or so, but personally, my concerns have always been the replacement cost of the toner/ink. But like you, I also have a really nice color printer which I don't think will be thrown away for quite a while. (Especially since I use it for specialty and high quality prints and not for regular day to day use).

@Nufy: If you need it all in a single unit, the Canon imageclass has been working very good for me. Slow to print (vs laser printers), good quality prints, overall decent, but not amazing as a color copier (but amazing usually means $$$). Scanning and copying are good, but I cannot comment on fax because although I know I have that function, I don't use it on this printer. But based on the applications I use, I have a laser printer MFC I also use (Brother) which I use normally for regular prints. Color printing black and white pages is killer on the ink replacement costs IMO.

You could perhaps choose to buy one lower end unit and one higher end? ie: One color/laser MFC that has copy/scan/fax and the other that merely prints?

Yeah I've run a b/w laser and a colour MFC in the past.

I do little enough printing now that even that isn't worth it to me to have two devices.

Currently I have an OfficeJet 8600 Pro and am very happy with it, I find the print quality to be excellent and the other features work fine. I don't use the scanner much as I scan enough that I got a dedicated ScanSnap 1500 (which I can't recommend enough).

A duplexer was a requirement for me as I hate wasting paper when I don't have to. It also answers distinctive ring to setup a fax # without having a second line.

I also found that the amount of ink use is quite frugal compared to my previous ink jet printers, the XL black ink cartridge costs $56 and is good for 2300 pages (depending on coverage of course), which is 2.5 cents per page. A laser can be somewhat cheaper, but that's a lot better than ink jet printers from years ago that were triple that.

A few years ago I struggled with the decision on whether to go colour or not, but in the end, for the relatively rare colour print I need, I just go to <insert most convenient copy shop>

As for photos, London Drugs does them waaay better than any colour printer I've ever owned.

I've been nothing but happy with my Brother 7840

I picked up a office jet 8710 I think

I got it on sale for about 150 bones, its a very solid color inkjet and it seems to get good volume for the cartridges. The scanner is also very good.

Far better then the crappy design jet home printers.

This is the best printer I have ever owned:

Does everything but color. Duplex printing at home is the best. Brother 3rd party cartridges cost ~12 bucks each on Amazon.

Highly recommended.

only comment would be how the printer itself is $120ish and the ink cartridges run about $40 each. seems that these days, the profit is in the ink as almost all cartridges are around $40 at best buy.

Wow... how the heck did this thing nearly double in price?

http://ca.camelcamelcamel.com/Brothe...uct/B00MFG58N6

I clicked the link and was wondering, "Didn't I pay $100 for this a little over a year ago?" Used options from the Amazon warehouse are like $90 bucks each shipping included. Getting a second one just for the drum and starter cartridge (500 pages I think) alone might be worth considering. Brand new at $220 (Amazon price is this too) is stupid.

I don't think it doubled in price, it's just like every other printer; only buy it on-sale, and it goes on sale ~6 times a year.

I grabbed it for $130 sometime last year.
