Awesome. In the conversation for best of all time. Good for him.

This is great, but didn't Mario play in that league? He's not retired???

Kind of odd to retire the number of the 182nd ranked all time scorer in your league, league wide no?

The pre-game ceremony was about an hour and a half long.
Simply unfathomable.
But 87 retired league wide? I'll have to check out the banners at Centre 200 next time I'm there haha

It's pretty incredible that Patrice Lefebvre could score 200 points in junior and the following season all he can find is a job in the French league. No NHL team deemed him worthy enough to even get an AHL deal?
Also, it's a really big miss to retire Crosby's 87 league wide but not Lemieux. Guy scored almost 300 points in a single season!

Yeah, but did Lemieux have a cool hat?

He managed to get 3 games with the 98-99' Capitals at age 31. Pretty fascinating career path - ended up playing in Italy until he was 42!

His size according to hockeydb was 5 foot six and 160 pounds.
In the 80s, that wasn't going to get you anywhere, unfortunately
Far too many small skilled guys never got a fair shake, and the Q was kind of always viewed as a league where the stats were inflated, no? Or was that later?
But 136 assists in 70 games - wow.

Although he came out of junior the same year as Fleury and was about the same size. You’d think some team might give him a chance at some point before he finally did get his cup of coffee in 1999.
But then I guess Martin St. Louis almost didn’t get a fair shake either and that was quite a bit later.

I watched him play a little for the Thunder in the 90's, he was really small, had a muffin of a shot and got knocked off the puck a lot, he had a little sandpaper to him but he was just too small, I remember thinking this guy has to be the smallest captain in pro hockey history(yes even smaller than Theo) former Flame Mark Habscheid was both his linemate and coach I think.
His skating and play making would likely have made him a very good NHL'er in today's game but not then.

I can't say I am a fan of leagues doing this. I would even go as far as saying I'd love to see the entire concept of retired numbers scrapped. I don't believe there is a better way to honor a player than to wear the number of a player you idolized.

Holy crap.
In 1983–84 when Mario Lemieux led the QMJHL with 133 goals and 282 points in 70 games, he outpaced the #2 scorer by 57 goals and 112 points. That is ridiculous.

Seems more like a league PR grab for some cheap short term marketing material and social media “likes” and “thumbs up” to have a current NHL player recognized in such a way before he’s even retired.
I’m sure you could go back further, but Mario put that league on the map, certainly for superstars (and/or superstars who played outside of the Canadiens) back when.
