I would certainly not qualify him. Makes him a UFA but I doubt there’ll be a lineup to sign him. Give him another chance at $950 on a one year deal. See whether he wants to be in the show or not. Maybe he doesn’t. That’s definitely how it looks.

I continue to feel that Janko doesn’t have the potential to be an impact NHLer - he’s decent but has no standout area. If he had a bit more speed, or a bit more smarts, he could be an effective player. Hope I’m proven wrong.

This seems to be the sentiment. Saw him a few times in Stockton and he stood out. Obviously the NHL is a different beast, but his commitment seems to be waning. He doesn't bring enough gristle at this point to thrive in the bottom six, and this limits his chances to grab the coaches' attention and climb the food chain. Haven't seen him live with the Flames, but will be at the Vegas game. I am interested to see how his speed and acceleration play in person at the NHL level.

I'm not an advanced stats wonk, but he is first on the team in relative Corsi (4.4%), 0.2% better than Tkachuk. And this is with much less favorable ice time, 66% defensive zone starts. He gets no PP time, a lot of PK time and maybe 7 minutes a game even strength. In other words, PEters buries him as a defensive specialist. What are we expecting from him? Sure I'd like to see him take the next step in his development, but I'm unclear on what others actually expect from him. Top six center? Peters would actually have to give him some time in the offensive zone, to start.

Powerplay Quarterback

He’s clearly taken a step backward this year, but I think there’s another problem as well. He’s not had the same quality of wingers he had last year. To be more specific, none of his wingers this year have been as good as Garnet Hathaway, either on offence or on the backcheck. The two had some chemistry, and I don’t see that on the fourth line this year.

More than 0 points.
All that you say may be true, but even if it is, a guy needs to at least put up some points, because there are other players just as good defensively, who can.

Like who? Derek Ryan? He's somehow finding a way to be worse than Monahan in relative Corsi despite getting much more favorable ice time than Jankowski. Point is there's no one on the team getting sandbagged defensively like Jankowski, everyone is getting more favorable ice time than him. And before you say "it's because he sucks", he's our #1 penalty killer.

Montreal wouldn't like that value and Calgary can't afford Byron's salary.

0 pts in 19 gp. How does that even happen.
Edit: I just checked and he's the only player in the entire league with 18 or more GP that doesnt have a point.

I mean, I know this is a rhetorical question, but the obvious answer here is that he quite simply isn't an NHL player.

There are roughly 55 players this season who have more defensive zone starts by percentage, and have played more than 5 games, than Mark Jankowski so far this season.
All but 6 have managed a point.

What Janko could be is a potential rallying point.
Seeing this team slide, and Janko with zero points, a coach could take him aside and say, 'this game coming up, you're going to play fast, physical, and work the boards. You're going to hit. You're going to get a big chance here, but you need to be the hardest working guy on the ice.'
And then you set the lines, and tell the team, 'come on boys, we're going to get Janko some points tonight. He's going to throw everything he has out there, and we're going to support him.'
First line minutes, powerplay time.
Get the team outside of their heads and playing for someone, and not numbers. Maybe even get Janko to figure out the kind of player he could be.
In a dream world. Peters isn't that guy.

^great post.
Totally agree with both parts.
Time to light a fire under Janko.
But Peters will never do it.

Ha ha ha. I'm not the biggest Peters fans but I don't think Scotty Bowman could light a fire under Jankowski. The guy is a fringe NHL player that's not long for this organization or maybe the NHL period.

Jankowski needs to sit four games in a row.
