Woof. I like Gallagher, but Alzner is an anchor already in the first of his 5 year contract.
Not sure why we'd be looking to trade Bennett at all. He's looking great now, is still only 21, and is on a cheap contract.
Meanwhile, Gallagher and Alzner have a combined caphit of $8.375.

Awful for the Flames. We can have a nearly $30M blueline with a third pair making $8M

That isn't even close to a sure thing. If I had a choice between the two I take gally personally.

If Ottawa retained like 2 mill on Ryan's cap hit then a Brouwer + Klimchuk for Ryan deal would be interesting.
Fresh start for Ryan. Brouwer still in Canada to a decent team should waive. Cheap Sens get rid of a big contract. Flames would add 2 extra years at around ~ 5 mill
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ryan
Tkachuk-Backlund-Ferland
Bennett-Jankowski-Hathaway
Mangiapane-Hrivik-Lazar
Stajan
IR - Versteeg, Jagr, Frolik (replaces Lazar/Stajan on big roster when healthy)

That would be crazy from Ottawa's perspective. They'd be paying $4.5 + 2mil (retained on Ryan) for a fourth liner. They'd be better to just keep Ryan at that price.

Klimchuk probably doesn't move any needle but can be bottom 6 forward. Plus Brouwer's contract is 2 years left after this, Ryan has 4 years left.

Ottawa is a cheap team they are not retaining money like that.
Also didn’t Ryan and Burke have a falling out over the Olympics in 2014 and the harsh comments from Burke.

Good god no.
You would hope Bennett turns into a younger, better version of Gallagher himself.
Why would the Flames want Alzner? Where does he even fit into the lineup?

Alzner falls somewhere between Hamonic and Stone on the depth chart.. why would we trade for him.

This is just my own pondering, and speculating.
If internally the Flames have determined that Gulutzan isn't the problem, and he is staying put
Then to me this system with this structure doesn't rely on high end talent on defense. Talent certainly helps, but stacking the back end is not necessary.
With the emergence of Kulak, and with Andersson knocking on the door and maybe Valimaki, and Kylington making a push there is the opportunity to move assets.
Do you trade your Captain? Do you trade your prized off season acquisition? Do you trade a 6'4 possession driver who is still just a kid? Do you trade a guy who was pegged as one of the best up and coming Dmen in the league? I don't know.
I like the make-up of this team. I like the top 6, I like the designated pairs of forwards and the complimentary forwards that go with them. But this team has a scoring problem. The system seems to stifle meaningful offence from the defense like we saw with Hartley's system, and allow less than elite dmen to thrive.
I would be floored if it happened mid-season, but I wouldn't be surprised that if a star winger came available, Treliving would make a play with someone from the top 4.
Or maybe we just have to wait one more season for Bennett to become a true impact, star forward.

He would be our newest whipping boy inside of a week. Imagine having him, Brouwer and Stajan eating up a cool $12m to play in the bottom of the lineup?

Bennett will never be like Gallagher, Gallagher plays hard but he doesn't hit because he's small, Bennett loves to crush people and is getting very good at it.
I hope Mangiapane can turn into a Gallagher type player

Yes.
My point is you would hope Bennett turns out to be the better player both physically & offensively.

I think the days of thinking of trading Bennett may be behind us for a while based on the way he's been playing the last few weeks. Looking like the guy we drafted now.

if the Flames did that trade, i'd be glad to see them move to Seattle/Houston so i can actively jeer them and hope for their failure after such a dumb trade

I get the sense the flames are at the verge of making a deal to give them a push for the run. However, thinking about it today, we may be best to not to do anything (especially with a rental) and see how this team performs between now and the deadline. If we are close, then ramp-up. If we continue to sputter at 4-6 points out, then retool and take advantage of high prices for players. If Backlund is not re-signed by then he is one guy you could move for a large haul and try to re-sign in the summer.

Why?
We take on a ton of salary including the boat anchor Alzner.
Just a horrible, horrible trade.
Makes the Flames worse talent wise and puts them in cap hell.
