I am looking at joining a club in the NW sector of the city.
Silver Springs and Bearspaw are my front runners.
Any Bearspaw members want to chime in and offer any opinions - positive or negative?
Thanks! I

I used to be a junior member about 20 years ago. I think it's one of the best tracks in and around the city. Damn, I miss that golf course.
I've heard the the new clubhouse is a bit of an albatross though. Its construction has also shut down the range for a while, apparently. From a pure golf perspective, it's a better course than Silver Springs.

Location to your residence is a big factor in my opinion. I can leave the house, warm up, play 18 and be home in 5 hours. Big Plus for me. I'm a member at Silver Springs for 4 years now. It's a good club for sure. If you haven't played it shoot me a PM and I'll see if we can arrange a time to play.

Was reading today about area golf courses and how they were going to have to come up with a policy on marijuana consumption, and in particular smoking. Currently public (ie municipally owned) courses will not allow it as per Alberta government law but private courses (all non municipal courses) are free to make their own decision. Given they mostly allow smoking and alcohol on the course as it is it will be interesting to see how they handle this one.

Do they really need a policy? They have a policy of no outside liquor on the course.

Very true about outside liquor, but at least there is a policy in place on most courses which allows them to take action if they see fit. Same would apply for pot. No policy would mean no control or means of taking action if there were disagreements or issues on the course.

Played 18 holes this afternoon and have another 18 planned for tomorrow as well 9 for mens night windup, plus another 18 on Wednesday. Could be the last rounds of the year of the weather goes really sour this weekend and continues into next week.
Interesting thing is the leaves are still on the poplar trees at Nanton. In years past they'd all be one the ground by now but we haven't had a hard killing frost yet. Nice to not have to be hunting for your ball in the leaves.

Nanton can be a disaster once the major leaf fall happens. Almost everything off the fairway is basically drive - go to where ball disappeared - drop new ball.

Or shuffle with your feet in the leaves and hope you find a ball to replace the one you lost.

Yes they are. I would phone first to see what golf bags they have left. In fact i'll check tomorrow and get some prices for you and send you a PM.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure myself and literally every golfer on earth has never gone into a round thinking "yeah, I'll just hit some off the fairway".

Thank you BUNK and PRAIRIEBOY for the thoughts on NW courses.
Any Bearspaw members want to chime in regarding what you are being told the next 5-10 years will look like regarding the clubhouse assessments? I have been told (by the club) to budget 700-1000 per year for the next 5-10 years. Accurate?
Once complete, Bearspaw will have a new clubhouse, new shortcake area, and full grass range with real golf balls. Have to admit... the practise facilities are a big draw for me.

Is the shortcake area next to the pudding green?

We show up at hole #13 (par 3 Nanton) and there's another group still teeing off. The first 3 guys put their balls in the water just short of the green. The last guy hits a beautiful iron shot that lands on the green and rolls up slowly hitting the pin. Instead of dropping in the ball it edges out leaving him a tap in for a bird.
One of our board members son was the unlucky one. He was ticked off and so were we! We thought we were headed to the clubhouse for some serious drinking and celebrating!

Silver Springs takes a back seat to Bearspaw in this regard. Although plans to upgrade the short game area are in the works. Driving range will never change to real balls.
No assessments in store for Silver.

$4200 annual at Bearspaw seems really high. I was told F&B is $900 on top.

I need to read the fine print...
I suspect the $4200 is all in (includes club storage, lockers, range etc.) If that's true, it's more in line with the going rate in Calgary for a private club. F&B is 50% higher than a couple other places I've been looking at.
