So I would like to build a decent linux machine, and could really use some help with selecting a couple of the parts.
Purposes:
- app development/maintenance
- DB development/maintenance
- video/audio editing
- graphics editing
- reading/writing large amounts of data
- dual-booting win10 for gaming
Requirements (open to having my mind changed):
- Ryzen 9 3900x (multi-thread performance vs intel)
- minimum 2x m.2 slots
- minimum 4x RAM slots
- WiFi 6 and 2Gb lan
- linux friendly
Parts I need help with:
- motherboard!
- graphics card!
Note: I added the linux-friendly requirement because i’m good with installing and using linux (including the shell), but not so good with troubleshooting hardware
Any advice would be ridiculously appreciated. I’m hoping to pull the trigger on everything tomorrow.
Edit: Forgot to mention my budget is $2000. Also, I’m currently leaning towards the 8GB RX 5700 XT graphics card, if that helps at all.
I was going to say the MSI Tomahawk seems to get rated highly, but I'm not sure if it supports ECC RAM. And I'm not sure if you want to use ECC RAM (i.e. if you're doing processing on the workstation).
Have also seen good reviews of the GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Master for higher end stuff.
EDIT: But as it says in the video the best power delivery is probably what I'd look for in a motherboard for work.
Are you gaming or doing work that leverages the GPU? If not I'd maybe downgrade to a 5500 XT or an RX 580, though I guess that doesn't save enough to go to Threadripper

I was looking at the Tomahawk too, so it's cool that you mentioned that. I'll take a look at that GB board too.
A Treadripper would be pretty baller, for sure... but the cheapest one at Memex is about 96% of my entire $2000 budget lol.

Edit 3: I like that Be Quiet case. Never heard of them before, but I like how clean it is.
It'd be ok I think but it'd run hotter than the mesh one I'd think, though I'm not sure if it'd be hot enough to cause CPU throttling under load, the reviews of the case I saw are pretty old.
Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh will be out shortly it corrects the so so cooling of the previous version. The stock fans still are not great (fairly loud) but if you're going with a AIO cooler that comes with fans not as much of a concern.
Yeah, and the Phanteks P400A and P500A are other options. The Cooler Master TD500 Mesh also and looks a bit different. The Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic also does well in either AIO or air but with all the glass it's geared towards making it pretty inside as well.

Why are you going for that slow expensive 2.5" SSD when the NVMe is way faster and cheaper.
There are only 2 NVMe slots on the board, and those are my two OS drives. The 1TB SSD is just a shared storage drive that both OSes can use.
Edit: Also, I already had the drive kicking around as a second drive in a laptop anyway.
Edit 2: Something I didn't even think of... can you get NVMe expansion cards?
Re: the Thermaltake case. I'm not overly happy with it, but it was literally a choice of a handfull of cases they had in stock that met my (mostly $$) requirements.
I'll probably swap out for a much nicer one in the near future. My budget going in was $2000 and my spend coming out was $2500, so I didn't have a lot of wiggle room to get a really awesome case.
I can't tell the difference, the Samsung benches a bit better. Unless you plan on doing heavy drive I/O tasks for years the Samsung is over priced IMO.

I take it the dual NVMEs are running in RAID1 for redundancy and not RAID0 for performance, right?
They're neither mirrored nor striped, as I'm literally using one drive for linux and the other drive for windows. That will change eventually though, now that I know about NVMe expansion cards!

Yeah that PC-011D is a nice case. It's probably the one I'm going to eventually go with... although, there's a very real possibility of me actually buying one of those desk cases.
