It is how the legal system works - there are plenty of presumptions in evidential matters. For exampple, any statement given at the time of an event is generally more credible than one given later, especially after possible coercion. This is especially so with spousal testimony in a domestic violence case. She would be treated as a hostile witness and subject to cross-examination, not direct examination.

No one is going to sign him. He's not good enough to take the PR hit involved.

Comparing the incident to Bertuzzi is ridiculous.

Hating Bertuzzi and the fact the Flames signed him is fine, a lot of us are in the same boat. But its not the same thing as beating your wife.

Wait, so Voynov wasn't put to death? I'm writing my congressman immediately.

News Update

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The NHLPA has filed an appeal on behalf of Slava Voynov. The appeal will be heard by an impartial arbitrator.

Knew that was coming. Hopefully the arbitrator tells them to pound sand. I wonder how other players feel about their association going to war for this guy.

Only to a few people, most people will likely understand how abuse works, particularly when there are millions of dollars involved.

So you find it impossible to believe Voynov's wife forgives and loves him? It may seem hard for us to understand, but sometimes couples do genuinely reconcile after domestic abuse.

As for the millions, the fact Voynov made piles of money means it would be easier for his wife to just walk away than it would be if he was a drywaller or truck driver. She would have been set up comfortably with half his money.

Probably the same as anything. The union probably feels the NHL overstepped their rights and the Union is defending the rights of their players. Its a slippery slope if you appeal some things and not others.

Abused wives of serial abusers almost always forgive them. Repeatedly. Often until they get killed or end up in the hospital for a while.

Whether or not she forgives him buys him no benefit for me.

Interesting way for the Arbitrator to please both sides.

By upholding Bettman's suspension he helps the NHL set precedent for this kind of behaviour.

By saying Voynov already served 41 games he lets Voynov and the NHLPA walk away with a reduced suspension.

In other words he reduced the suspension without officially reducing the suspension.

Kings say they won't sign Voynov.

Unless there is more to this story they retain Voynov's rights so they could potentially get an asset if another team wants Voynov.

Good for LA. He shouldn’t be playing in the NHL.

TBH the Kings should just sign Voynov. It would make their ####ty team better and I already hate them, so what's one more ######bag on the team?

I'd be curious to know what clauses of the CBA the arbitrator used to justify that 41 game credit.

Which is garbage. They terminated his contract, why should they still retain his rights? Oh wait, it is the Kings and they can do what they want.

Any team would have the same rights. The contract termination involved a “voluntary retirement” which keeps the players rights with the team. The Kings have no interest in Voynov, and neither do any of the teams rumored via social media. I doubt Voynov ever plays in the NHL again. No team is that desperate for defense.

It seems you're a long way from the stench that is Edmonton, there isn't a more desperate team period.
