I have to be a dissenting opinion on Buffo, although we went for mother's day so I will probably give them another chance.
Bolognese was spicy. Like massively over-seasoned. Bolognese shouldn't be spicy. Wife had the funghi pizza, I thought the bechamel was oddly sweet. Server was in a bit of a hurry to hustle us out, which fine - it's mother's day. But the place was half empty as we walked out. We weren't holding up a table. The wine we had was pretty darn good though.

Is this for realz? Or another "oh no, they're closing, better get a reservation while you can", ala Wellingtons?
Edit - reminder to self to google before posting... It is closing for realz.

That's too bad, but last time I was there it certainly felt like it was time to "hang em' up". Such dated decor, furniture and food, like a bizarre time warp into the early 90's.
The cuisine was good classic french, but I just don't think that resonates with the emerging class of dinners, especially in an economic downturn.

I only went once years ago, but it's always unfortunate when a place which has been around for a long time decides to shut down.

Construction on 17th is hurting a lot of businesses, and some are resulting in crazy promos.
Ceili’s on 17th ave is offering free wings on Friday with a drink purchase from 3pm-7pm
Decent wings and the happy hour beer counts as a purchase

Hit Workshop again the past weekend. I really think it is the best in Calgary and the one place here which really measures up to "big city" restaurants (aside from steak - that's a separate category). A lot of the other places that I like a lot, I find I qualify with "it's great... for Calgary". Workshop is very inventive, great presentation, and the food is delicious. Didn't hurt we had a bottle of Opus with our dinner.

I lived down the street from the Chef when we were kids. He's been through a lot and I'm glad he's successful.

Nights & Weekends (pop up restaurant in Meat & Bread) was pretty good. Small menu, but everything was pretty good. $40/person for the tasting menu and portion sizes were pretty big. We then went to check out the new Hawthorne restaurant in the Palliser for cocktails and dessert which was nice (I recommend the cinnamon toast crunch crepe).

Wife and I also went to Hawthorne on the weekend. Food was decent and had that same dessert which was amazing.

Took the wife to Lulu bar last week. Very nice space, food was excellent, only drawback is that the portion size was a touch light for the price.

Pretty sad that Kinjo had to drop the sample roll, Pocky's and fruit salads for the kids - he's been doing that since the Sakana Grill days and it was a bit of a trademark.
That said, every bit of margin counts nowadays. All the restaurants are hiking prices and trying to cut where they can. This was probably $4 of stuff every time.

Went to the soft opening and was able to try almost everything on the menu.
Didn't have a single bad dish; everything was fantastic. We didn't have to worry about the price though.
From looking at the menu, some of the dishes definitely seemed a little pricey for the serving size.
Really nice atmosphere too.

I'm a big fan of Shokunin, so strange to find this caliber of restaurant in land locked Calgary. Tasty bold authentic Japanese cuisine with creative spins on traditional Izakaya, its a legitimate rival of what I have found deep in Shinjuku. The Sashimi is excellent for North America too, not quite on par with say Tojos/Nobu/Masa, but arguably best in Calgary.
Its relatively expensive for small portions, but its cheaper than flying to Tokyo for similar caliber fare. If you're on a budget you can always fill up on the Ramen, but that is not the star of this restaurant.
Also its noisy AF, cocktails are overpriced, walk-in tables are very unlikely, and the seating is cramped, but I've come to accept that as the normalized standard of new age dinning across Calgary.
