Also, the first NHL team to honour the number "1" as its very first retirement.

Maybe they'll retire the immortal Lyle Odelein's #2 next and keep things sequential.

Really neat it is the first time a team has retired #1 first.

Looking at other #1s retired around the league Luongo is in elite company with Bower, Broda, Giacomin, Hall, Parent, Plante, and Sawchuk,

It's too bad the stupid Canucks had to grab him. He was my favorite goalie right before the Kipper era began. Happy he escaped though.

I find it interesting to retire the number of a player that became more well known and had more success with a different team...

It is interesting at first glance, especially being that as Flames fans we closely associate him with our biggest rivals of that era, but he’s the Florida franchise leader in almost every goaltending category (by a lot) and spent the majority of his career as a Panther.

Most of his markers probably won’t be matched for a very long time.

I think he was well known the entire time. Sure he had more playoff games in Vancouver, but that was largely due to the fact Florida went full Oiler for a while. He played hundred more game in Florida than he did in Vancouver.

Luongo has had a great career. His jersey potentially gets retired by two teams. Won't be surprised if the Canucks eventually raise it to the rafters too.

I think he was already well known in Florida, that was a blockbuster trade when he moved to Vancouver.

He had already made an NHL season end all-star team, and had finished top 3 in Vezina voting in Florida prior to that trade.

Florida - GP: 572 Wins: 247 SV%: .919
Van - GP: 448 Wins: 367 SV%: .919

So he may have had more team success in Vancouver but individually he was already really good in Florida and more career GP.

How well would the islanders have been if they kept Luongo instead of giving up on him so early.

WTF are you talking about?

He's second all time in games played with 1044.

If you look at the time frame of when he began his career in 1999 to now, only one goalie has more wins: Martin Brodeur.

He's near the top of the list for career save percentage over the time frame of his career at .919. Over that same time frame, the highest career save percentage of any goalie with at least 200 games is John Gibson at a whopping .921.

Won internationally with a World Junior silver, two golds and one silver at the World Championships, a gold at the World cup, two Olympic Gold Medals.

One win away from a Stanley cup in game 7 of the cup finals with the Canucks (blech)

But even as a Panther he leads them in the following categories:
Games
Wins
Shots Faced
Saves
Shutouts

Why the hell wouldn't they retire his jersey?

6 playoff games. 2 playoff wins in 11 seasons.
However if a funny twitter account is 50% of the criteria for jersey retirements in Miami, then it is a no brainer.

No one.

They have honoured both Wayne Huizenga (original owner) and Bill Torrey (first team President) with banners, but neither were players.

Groovy, Seems like he is a good choice then, a future Hall of Famer, who holds a couple of franchise records. Good for him. I'd imagine the next in line will be Jonathan Huberdeau who might well be there all time points leader by the end of next season.
