Default Old Calgary stuff you miss...(The Nostalgia thread)

For those of us that are lifers, we have seen a lot of great things come and go in Calgary. What are some of the people, places and things from your younger days you miss the most that are no longer around?

I miss the broadcast day opening with this right before the Hercules and Abbott and Costello cartoons came on at 6:00 am:

In fact I miss that hokey friendly version of this great City.

I miss hanging out at South Cycle in The Bonavista Downs drooling over Kuwahara BMX bikes.

In my early twenties nothing kicked more ass than catching Live Metal Shows at the Live Wire at The Carriage House Inn.

And most of all, I miss this guy:

I miss that waterpark that used to rip your back up when you went down the slides.

Was that on MacLeod?

come to think of it, it kinda sucked. but at least it was a waterpark.

Yup, lol, I am 35 so we weren't to far apart. The awesomness of the 13 channel deluxe cable package.... and the waterslide was called "Banzai". Developed my fear of water there when I almost drowned and had to be CPR'd back to life...lol.

Wow, watching that 2&7 jingle brought a lot of old memories/feelings back.

Not sure why, but I used to love that too.

Bonzai was by shanks south, I heard stories but never went. Serious puck rollerland was the bomb, how old are you? Might have went to the lawn with you. I think you are alot younger though.

That end footage with Brad Marsh and Ed Whalen at the end in the Old Corral is so freaking cool. You gotta dig the retro uni's.

edit: who's the third guy, Paul Reinhardt?

watching every game on channel 7 for free (now we gotta pay for sportsnet and ppv)

the last drive thru A&W on center

going from crowfoot to downtown during rush hour was a 15 minute drive (dad's comment)

I miss Devonian Gardens in TD Square. Used to have a small ice rink in there in the winter too.

A mostly crime free city, the Coral drive in, mini skirts, concerts at the Coral, midnight madness night at the stampede, the Cowboy breakfast at the only Humpty's restaurant @ 4am, Paskapoo, that 1950's MacDonald's on 4th st. NW, cruising on 6ave to 8th st. and around to 9th ave down to center st. on Saturday nights... Stampede Wrestling LoL

As cheesey as this is going to sound, when you watch that clip, everyone looks so happy, and wholesome. This was still a very western orientated place, with a bunch of guys making a name in the oil business. The City was just in its infancy of becoming this big corporate super city. Everyone to me back then seemed so down to earth and friendly compared to today. The City was clean, the old rumors about Calgary being a little "town" of 500,000 seemed so accurate.

The 7-11 in Canyon Meadows. Now it's an A1 Convenience store. It sucks to see the little guy pushed out in favour of big business.

The Greek, Chinese and Deli in Westbrook Mall.. and that store San Francisco
Sizzling Wok
Coach Hill before the population exploded
Calgary before the boom
The Flames, when it was unique to be a fan

It was a really awesome place to grow up but man, so much about Calgary is not what it was.. a different world from the place I grew up in.

Consumers Distributing. Used to go there each year and use my birthday money from my grandparents to buy a new toy.

Fill out a slip of paper, take it to the counter and cross your fingers that it was in stock. Waiting for the guy to search around in the back for your item was torture!

Also, when there was less Saskatchewanians here. Jesus, so many of them came here during the boom, and they would all brag about how much better it was there than Calgary. Great, so go back.
