Calgary took on a large salary but shed themselves of a massive one, saving many millions of dollars on the process.
It's a net gain at the end of the day.
Is that really so hard to understand?

Of course there were other parts of the trade.

Maybe I'm overrating Valimaki but before his injury, he is a piece I would only trade for a 1C to improve on or equal Monahan, not for a 1RW

Flames trade Neal for Lucic (Oilers retain 12.5%) and conditional 2020 3rd
I believe someone posted that the Oilers have a low quality of competition this month and we’re predicted to win about 70% of those games so I wouldn’t worry about the teams hot start (or Neal’s). Even if they go 7-3-0 to start the season they’ll probably bottom out starting in November. They started 6-3-1 last year and ended up in the lottery.

I firmly believe that this trade was mainly about the Flames saving $10M.
Neal's lack of effort and rumoured locker room discord were probably secondary reasons.
I'm actually quite happy that Neal is scoring goals for the Oilers, I hope he scores enough of them so that the Flames will receive Edmonton's 3rd round draft pick in 2020.

That is a colossal “if”.
There is really nothing in Valimaki’s resume to suggest there is any reasonable liklihood he’s going to me a Norris Trophy winner.
Now, you can say the exact same thing about Gio, but that really means nothing.
Valimaki is a very good prospect for sure, but there were many d-men rated higher.
Yes he “could” become Gio. And I could redesign my condo into levels.

I dunno. Maybe I'm overrating Valimaki and underrating Stone. I tend to agree with Treliving here that Valimaki was too high of a price to give up for him. And obviously, Brad could not have predicted Valimaki's serious injury.
Do we know if Stone even wanted to extend with the Flames? He signed with Vegas pretty much instantly, which makes me think that's where he wanted to be?

Everyone brings joy to my day. Some when they enter it. Others when they leave it.
I think this quote can be applied to each player and their respective clubs and former clubs.

Did everyone notice how Luch slashed hat Dallas player after he scored.
That type of lay has been missing from his team for a while. I love guys that get pissed after the other team scores

Neal has 7 goals in 4 games Oil are 4-0 it's early but so far this has been a train wreck trade for the Flames. Come on Oil start doing your thing....

Let's revisit this after 20 games. As of now we want him to get 20 to 30 goals for the pick. Is Neal really the piece missing that makes the oilers a playoff team? If he scores 150 goals, sure maybe. I think most people know the answer to that question.

The silver lining is that Oiler fans preached on how they didn't have to protect Neal in the expansion draft. Perhaps Neal has just good enough of a season for them to protect him & the flames get a 3rd round pick!

I doubt Treliving was transparent in what all was involved in that trade.
I hear you about how valuable Valimaki is but IMO you pay that price for one of the best forwards in the game. But as I said, there were undoubtedly other pieces in that trade and of course you had the challenges of fitting Stone’s salary.

Who predicted they would win 70%? The greatest teams in history would have a hard time doing that.

How's that? Are the Flames worse off because of the trade? I don't see it.

I voted Hate it, Neal will be better in Edmonton so far this is the case. I've said many times I don't really care about Lucic being here or not, it's that we helped the Oilers.
But knowing Edmonton they'll do their patented face plant, they better.
