I've officially submitted it as an idea for them. The authority should definitely consider it and throw some bucks at BA to make it happen. The PR would be great for both the airport and BA and their LHR route.

I think I would be kind of dissapointed if the 380 came only for the opening and won't fly out of YYC to LHR.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but will YYC get a route serviced by the 380?

Well Concorde came to YYC and it never operated a regular route from us either.
Since YYC is touting how the new runway and terminal can easily accommodate the A388 it would be a great PR move on their part.
And no, there are no operators that will be servicing YYC using the A388 anytime in the near future. Just too much capacity (and too much first/business class) for our market. Air Canada introducing the 77W's next summer on the LHR and FRA flights is a big capacity increase, but still not on the level of the A388.

Let's get that Antonov back landing on this runway as the main feature. Before it lands, it opens its doors and drops out thousands of 'Nenshi for Mayor' pins, t-shirts and lawn signs.
Then, when everyone is confused, the new terminal rises from the ground, turning into a Transformer. It gives the crowd the mechanical finger, takes a dump (consisting of garbage, nuts, bolts and rebar) and runs off into the distance.

Another likely operator that we could entice to fly in an A380 for the celebration would be Emirates. If any airline has one to spare it would be them, and they would really like the PR and exposure it would give them in YYC.

Saw someone's suggestion to have the big planes (A380, An-225) and the snowbirds show up on the page! Don't know how to like it though...

The one small problem there is the large cargo door on th An-225 is that nose section covers the cockpit and would also make the whole "flying" thing a little hard.
But it would be a cool feat if they pulled it off.

Or Ethiad, they should have their A380s by 2014.

The new runway will open on June 28 at 2pm.
The weekend of June 14-15 will be a public open house to be able to go on the runway and stuff.

Did they announce how they were going to ring in the festivities?

Just reporting what I saw on twitter from the council meeting this morning, not sure on the details of the event yet.

Driving on a runway is a scary time.
I was in a skid car taking a driving course and I had the car spinning. I spun around to see a 737 coming towards me to land. Momentarily scared the crap out of me. The plane stopped short and I recovered the skid car before I gave a new definition to skid cars.

Where was this and why the heck would you be allowed to drive on an active runway? It makes zero sense.

In Grande Prairie, and I don't really understand why it was allowed, but the driving course rented the end of the runway. They even set up a trailer at the end that couldn't be moved then brought ten of us on with 5 trucks and the skid car to race around while planes were landing.

In Grande Prairie the thresholds for RWY12 and RWY07 kind of overlap creating a kind of V shape with the runways. RWY30/12 gets the most action.
Without knowing specifics, my best guess would be that a section of 07/25 was NOTAMed closed for this driving thing. While 30/12 was still in use, and the story isn't as death defying as it sounded.
Not to rain on your parade Matt. Just trying to make some sense.

Looking at the aerodrome chart for Grande Prairie I'd say that makes the most sense. GP_Matt was most likely driving on 25 and saw the 737 landing 30 and stopping well before the intersection of 07/25.
