[Line-up Thread] Special Teams?
So what do the special teams look like?
I tried to take a crack at it, and it's harder than it seems... ( )
(I'm assuming we sign Iggy)
5PP1
Gaudreau Monahan Versteeg
Giordano Iginla
5PP2
Frolik Backlund Bennett
Tkachuk Hamilton
4PP1
Gaudreau Monahan
Giordano Iginla
4PP2
Tkachuk Backlund
Hamilton Bennett
------------------------------------------
4PK1
Frolik Backlund
Brodie Hamonic
4PK2
Brouwer Stajan
Kulak(?) Stone
3PK1
Backlund
Brodie Hamonic
3PK2
Monahan
Giordano Stone
What would yours look like?

I'd put Giordano and Hamilton on the 1st PP unit first and foremost. Next I'd replace Brouwer with Ferland.
After that I'd throw Brodie and Stone on the 2nd PP unit.
Gaudreau Monahan Ferland
Giordano Hamilton
Frolik Backlund Tkachuk
Brodie Stone
Depending on how hot or cold the PP is I would consider rotating Versteeg in there, but not on the point.
So sick of forwards on the point.
My PK would look something like this:
Backlund Frolik
Giordano Brodie
Brouwer Stajan
Stone Hamonic
Losing Bouma sucks for the PK as I thought that was the one thing he was still pretty good at.

I'm not sure what our final lineup will look like, but here are some changes that I would like to see this year:
PP:
- Brodie is not first PP unit material, particularly not when he is the only defenceman. Replace him with Hamilton and/or Gio on the first unit
- Our offensive forward list is not long enough at the moment to support 4F 1D formation on the PP. At least one of the two units should have 2D, but in my opinion, ideally both. It's difficult to just put a good winger on the point and expect them to be similarly effective in that position, but this is more of a personal preference. Goes against the grain of what many NHL teams are doing
- Ferland should replace Brouwer on the PP
PK:
- As much as I would prefer Backlund and Frolik to not block shots on the PK several times a night, they are so good that they simply have to be a PK unit
- Stajan is another great forward on the PK, I would like to see him used with an unnamed 4th line kid with something to prove
- Hamonic changes the look of our PK defence significantly. If he and Stone can carry heavy lifting on the PK, that should really open up 5vs5 options for a fresh Gio, Hamilton, and Brodie

I am a huge supporter of Iginla on this team but him on the point for our PP would cause nightmares short handed no doubt and if we go that route I believe it's one of Gaudreau or Versteeg as a puck distributor. Iggy needs to be the gun on the off wing ala Ovechkin.
Iginla - Monahan - Gaudreau
Giordano - Versteeg/Hamonic
Tkachuk - Backlund - Ferland/Bennett
Brodie - Hamilton
This is how I see it playing out at least to start the season *Iggy signing happening of course
Pk is a little easier:
Backlund - Frolik
Giordano - Hamonic
Bennett - Ferland
Brodie - Stone

Those looks good but I think you've forgotten about Giordano @ 4PK. Or what's the rationale for not having the captain on 4PK but on 3PK?

Iginla on the point? The Flames would lead the league in shorthanded goals against.

Relative to last season, Hamilton should be on the #1 PP unit, Brouwer should be replaced by Bennett

Yeah, I'm definitely not putting a 40 year-old on the point on the PP.

Bouma was actually probably our worst PKer last season.

Hamilton needs to be on the first unit, biggest minutes, full stop.

They need to get Brodie off the top unit. If he refuses to shoot, then keep him off the second unit as well.

Thought there was some exciting upside having Stone's booming shot available late last season. Could be an interesting depth component on the power play this year.
