Armenian MoD claims Turk F16 shot down Armenian Su25 at 1030 local time. Not good if true.

Footage from the Armenian lines in NKR. You can hear Azeri drones loitering above.

This is the first video released by the Azeri MoD showing the use of loitering munitions (aka suicide drones).

Situation as of 1 Oct 20

Hostilities continue along the entire contact line in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azeris first attacked air defenses and tanks near the forward line of their own troops. They have since moved on to target Armenian artillery and groups of soldiers. With the apparently successful attacks on Armenian air defenses, the Azeris might be confident now to use their aircraft against ground targets.

This conflict (and Libya) continues to show the effectiveness of drones - almost to the point of making armoured vehicles useless. At the very least, both sides need to re-evaluate how they employ their tanks. Azerbaijan needs lessons in combined arms and mutual support and Armenia needs to study concealment.

It isn't clear to me how much maneuver the Azeris have conducted, if any. But it seems Azerbaijani drones are operating without great resistance right now and will likely continue to knock out Armenian artillery, armor, and OPs unless something changes. Regardless of how effective Armenian soldiers are, they will struggle to hold onto their defensive positions if they continue to face an effective aerial threat operating with impunity. So the question is, what will Armenia do about it?

Armenian claims of Azeri losses:
- 89 UAV
- 9 helicopters
- 166 armoured vehicles
- 4 aircraft
- 1 MLRS
- 920 pers KIA/WIA

Azeri claims of Armenian losses:
- up to 200 armoured vehicles
- 228 artillery, including MLRS and mortars
- 31 air defense systems, including 1 x S-300
- 6 command posts
- 5 ammo dumps
- 110+ vehicles (non-armoured)
- 2000 KIA/WIA

The usual caveat applies in that both sides exaggerate the losses of the other for propaganda purposes.

The Armenians shot down two Azeri missiles over Abovyan/Yerevan tonight. I wonder how long it will take for Armenia to respond with Iskander ballistic missiles.

There is this for "confirmation":

https://twitter.com/user/status/1311748679401984000

although it doesn't confirm much to me.

If S-300, I think it's the first time it's been fired in anger.

The media pays little to no interest in this situation, but watch closely. This has the potential to involve a lot of stakeholders. Up to now, this conflict has remained in NKR. But now that Armenia proper is involved, the situation may escalate quickly.

As of 3 October, the Armenian (AR)-Azerbaijani (AZ) war entered its 7th day, with no signs of letting up. In fact, the conflict appears to be gaining momentum. Forces of the AZ military, supported by Turkey, continued their attempts to capture the contested Nagorno-Karabakh Region (NKR), especially in the northern and southern sectors.

Azerbaijan president announced Azerbaijani forces have captured the village of Madaghis. If confirmed, it would be the first populated settlement captured by Azerbaijan in seven days of fighting.

Yesterday, AZ military shelled the NKR capital of Stepanakert.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1312405553562488832

In response, AR claims NKR commando group infiltrated behind AZ lines and destroyed AZ missile system allegedly responsible for the attack on Stepanakert.According to the link, the missile system was Israeli made LORA.

Azerbijan continues to attack Stepanakert today.

Armenia has attacked Azeri city Ganja. Armenia MoD states the target was the military airport. If so, it appears they missed.

Azerbaijan continues to bombard Stepanakert. This video shows the aftermath and it also highlights cluster munitions were probably used.

A few posts, above, I mentioned the difficulty the AZ and AR/NK forces have with combined arms and concealment. Well, this is what happens when a single tank advances without infantry support (AR MoD video):

And here is what happens when you advance infantry in a tight file while under enemy observation (AR MoD video):

https://twitter.com/user/status/1312770302821179393

This video also highlights why the front line hasn't budged in years:

1. the terrain is difficult for vehicle movement, resulting in the vehicles having to use the roads. And when that happens, all the defender has to do is take out the lead vehicle and the column halts;

2. the defender has decent observation; and

3. the defender can register the gorge for artillery fire.

Armenian tanks out in the open:

The Azeris have effectively used drones in their campaign in NKR. One type of drone they use is the Turkish-made TB2. So what? Well this particular drone uses the Canadian-made WESCAM-MX-15D tactical surveillance and target acquisition camera.

Today, the Canadian government announced that it is suspending export permits to Turkey because of concerns that the technology is used against civilians.

Ugh, but LAVs rolling around Yemen is cool.

Not condone use on civilians, that ####ed and should be admonished. But if you want to take issue with how your weapons or parts are used do it with all the weapons or parts you sell.

Be consistent.

I think that this is a polite Canadian way of letting Turkey know that stirring up tensions in the Mediterranean and through the middle-east, as well as supplying one side of a war against a nation to which you were previously a party to genocide... it's not cool, man.

So we care in this conflict, but when Saudi Arabia uses Canadian made military equipment in Yemen then our government doesn't care?

Taking a stand against the Saudi's is taking the chance of alienating the Americans.

Let's not leave out Cambodia and Pol Pot or the Balkan states during the 90's (ethnic cleansing and genocide in colour), multiple African dictators, #### there are lots of despicable countries/leaders to list off.

Seem odd that Turkey vaults up to the top.

No one has any love for the US? they have an unblemished record for invading third world countries since 1900, no other country has had the reach to invade countries in the far east, middle east and on their own doorstep as consistantly

Fair comment, they are making a play to put themselves into the upper echelons next to The British Empire.

Just by pure numbers. Rating genocide really isn't my thing. Turkey is just the most forgotten considering it's size, and it's disturbing to see that they are following an identical path towards rebuilding the Ottoman Empire, that bled into the first series of genocides.

Oh I dont know, we killed 2 to 3 million by starvation in Bengal in 1943, the US have a way to go before they challenge an empire run by Churchill for gross indifference to non white lives
