Default Cell Roaming suggestions?

Hello,
What do you use/recommended for international roaming solutions for your cell phone? I have an old phone that currently has no plan/SIM card, and I’m thinking I should have it unlocked and get one of these roaming SIMs but I’m not sure if it’s as simple as that?

Primarily looking for solutions for travel outside of the US, but anything helps. Thank you.

I used to get a local SIM but since Rogers Roam Like Home came in and is only $10 per day I've found it's not worth the hassle. It depends on where you are going and for how long.

If you just need data, don’t care about people reaching you on your number, and don’t need to call people then I’d recommend Keepgo. It works in nearly every country and simple to use. You get whatever you buy (a gig or more) to start and as long as you add data before the year is out you’re good for another year. If you’re travelling at least once yearly it’s a good deal as you don’t have to mess with finding a local SIM. With WhatsApp, hangouts, Skype, iWhatever I don’t find I need an actual phone number for most trips.

If you go that route get in touch as they offer referral bonuses I think for both of us.

Public mobile is very cheap for roaming into the US, but they don't offer other countries.

When I traveled through Italy we used a service called Expresso Wifi that rents an LTE mobile hotspot with unlimited data. Just threw it in the backpack and you could connect 10 devices. Way better then dealing with local sims, buying data, Airbnb/hotel wifi, etc and I didn’t have much use for making calls.

A company rep met us at our baggage carousel in Rome and handed us the device and I dropped it off at the front desk at a hotel in Florence on our way home. Super easy, I am sure most countries have similar services.
