Shhhh...it's easier for some to just hold the NDP accountable for everything wrong in their life and then complain when they don't fix it.

Look, NDP are socialists. Socialists believe in centralized government, which means they will eventually seize power from the cities and run it all out of their palace in Edmonton. I was just fast forwarding to the summer when we can expect NDP representatives to already be in our neighbourhoods ensuring we haven't exceeded our allotment of toilet paper. I figured this service would dovetail nicely with that.

It would be more enjoyable putting my dog waste in an orange bin.

I like the old school approach:
"Hey [insert kids name here] - you social life depends on you remembering that every Friday is garbage/recycling/compost day."

I admit I forget often as well, for the exact same reason. Also, no big deal. I could go 4 weeks without pick up for the amount of garbage I produce, which is why I like this green bin dealio. I think that over the course of the year, more than 50% of what goes into my black bin is grass clippings and dog shiz.

If I did I would have put a little more into my response than an emoji.
I actually had a good chuckle reading that post, if I thought you were serious I would have pm'd you some links to resources so you could seek help.

We've had the green carts in Airdrie for 3 years now. We just started with the blue carts at the beginning of April. Love 'em. We put hardly any garbage out. The city here added a little thing to the myAirdrie account of everyone that uses it, and if you request it, they send an email reminder the night before - Tuesday nights for green bin/garbage day on Wednesday, Wednesday night for Thursday blue bin pick up.
From the beginning of May through to the end of October, our green bin pick up is weekly. November to end of April is bi-weekly.

The Taipei system wouldn't work in Calgary due to density issues, but some variation of it would be interesting.
Here, there is no automated pickup, you have to go meet the garbage trucks. They come through most neighborhoods three times a day. Around my place that's about 17:00, again around 19:30, and then again at 22:00. They announce their arrival by playing Fur Elise.
You need to be waiting to meet them with your garbage and pre-sorted recycling. The city encourages people to recycle by allowing an unlimited amount of recycling to be dropped off, so long as it's sorted and cleaned: cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, and recycling.
'Garbage' on the other hand, is not limited per se, but the garbage trucks will only accept garbage that is in officially-licensed and really tremendously expensive bags. They cost about $0.50 CAD for a kitchen-sized bag and $1.00 to $1.75 each for larger bags and nothing gets close to the size of the green 'Hefty-sac.'
Due to density, this 'garbage-never-touches-the-ground' system wouldn't work in Calgary, but a fee-structure where recycling is encouraged by increasing the cost of throwing items out instead of recycling them would be something really worth exploring.
Some videos about Taiwan's garbage-collection:

I really suspect if we start charging a per-bag fee for garbage that we'd end up with bags of garbage on the side of the road.

Huh, interesting. Tapatalk turns a hyper-linked video into an embedded video. Anyone know how to change that?

WTF! I can't imagine the space all those carts take up, especially in ones garage. Thankfully we only have black ones for garbage in High River. Even then my bin is parked on the street twice a month.

Green, blue and black in Okotoks. Fortunately I have an alley and just leave them out there.
