I also have a tin foil hat theory that if an all Canadian division were to go down, Johnny wants no part of being away from family for a season. Given that travel for them would be unlikely.

Yeah but as a parent I would want my kid playing in the all Canadian division before playing in the states under these circumstances.

Gaudreau+Monahan
For
Barzal+Eberle
Islanders LTIR Boychuk and the cap works.
Flames would likely have to dump Ryan but they would then be able to offer Barzal in the 8-10M range. I doubt the Islanders do it but Lou ain’t getting any younger so maybe he sees removing a challenging negotiation by buying low on one of the top scoring combos of the last 6 years.

As a Canadian parent you would maybe. Even the least patriotic americans i've ever met still have a preponderous belief that the USA is the best place in the world to live at any given moment in time.
Now, given that Alberta has higher case per 100k amounts than basically anywhere else in the states right now outside of South Dakota, I would question your stance on it. It may in fact be better for our children to be in New Jersey right now.

Sign me up for that action.
Tkachuk - Barzal - Lindholm
Mangi - Backlund - Eberle
Dube - Bennett - Leivo
Lucic - Ruzicka - Simon

I would put Gawdin in over Ruzicka personally but that lineup looks more like a Stanley cup contender than the current roster in my opinion.

Real question. What does Barzal do that Monahan doesn’t?

Im a big Monahan fan and think he takes a lot of unwarranted flak around here, but the answer is carries the puck and generates offense directly through skating, creativity, and speed.

I’d still like to see what Monahan could be capable of. Playing on Johnny’s line, the puck is always Gaudreaus, break ins, setting up plays. Always deferring to him.
I could see Monahan developing some more skills if he had more time to possess the puck and be responsible for pushing the play.

Ryan might need to be a cap dump to make it all work money wise

Or he could be way worse by not getting propped up by Johnny.

I would even add a 2021 2nd/1st top 3 protected. I would do whatever it takes to make this happen.

I'm not so sure there's much improvement unless you believe that Monahan/Gaudreau are done.
First line is likely a beast.
Second line is a big down grade with Eberle in for Tkachuk
Third line is relying on BOTH Bennett and Dube showing much more than they ever have consistently.
Fourth line is a complete crapshoot.
Centre depth is thin.

I think that management recognizes the need for a #1, play-driving C, who is more fleet-of-foot. I also think that it's why there's been talk of trying Lindholm at C. I love Mony, and I can see his merits as a #1C, but perhaps he's not the #1C we need;my bet is they trade Mony in the short-term.

I know you put out a lot of big trade proposals but I really do appreciate how they are fairly level in comparison to other posters.
In regards to this trade we get an upgrade at centre AND even though I know it doesn't mean much I know for a fact Eberle would love to be a Flame.
So if the money could somehow work this is a somewhat logical trade.
