Lomberg wants that Hathaway spot and I bet the flames would like him to take it, but for minimum wage.

We have a shortage of middle six forwards. If we sell Frolik, we need to find a very cheap replacement which is hard.

On the other hand, we could just sell Brodie and be okay with the defensemen we have.

Valiev actually has more NHL games than Lomberg. (12 to 11 lol, but still more)

I actually think Valiev could make a lot of NHL teams as a depth defenseman. His best bet would be to take the league minimum to make it easier to call him up. He would stand a good chance of actually making more money than if he has a higher NHL salary.

Selling Frolik would leave a hole for sure, and you’re kind of banking on hope that Neal turns things around in that case. I think it’s a mistake to trade Brodie for futures however, as the return for players with no salary coming back is never what you would hope for.

The NHL Arbitration system is poorly set up.

In MLB, each side puts forth a position, and one of the two must be chosen. It makes both put forth reasonable positions.

Each NHL arb. last year had the exact middle of the two positions chosen, which strikes me as the arbitrators being somewhat weak in their stance, and afraid to rock the boat by taking a stance.

Treliving does not dislike players who file for arbitration, he dislikes the current system and process of it.

Yeah I prefer the way MLB does it too. It forces both sides to be more realistic as well

My guess is Stone will be bought out on 2nd buyout window, if they haven't traded Brodie by then. Don't think Flames will trade Brodie for the sake of just trading him for anything they can get. Kadri made sense. Is there another player out their with some jam that can play in the top 6 that another team is willing trade? That team would also need a top4 dman.

Don’t forget Lindholm was one of the Flames who filed last year and I don’t think Treliving is in any rush to move him.

Filing for arbitration and getting a deal done prior to is very different than actually making it to the arbitration hearing. The hearing is where the relationship can get fractured.

I could see Brodie traded for cap space and picks. The same for Frolik.

So if Stone gets bought out, he counts. $1.17 million against the cap. Someone replaces him on the 23 man roster, say Kylington, so you’re saving a little more than $1.5 million against the cap this year. For that, you get to carry $1.17 million of dead money into the next year.

All things being equal, I’d rather just carry him as a seventh defenseman and be done with him after the year. But Flames may have little choice and might need that space now. Maybe someone takes him if you eat half his salary IDK.

If they're going to open up extra space by moving those contracts, I'd hope they'd then make a run at Dzingle.

He'd be an upgrade on Jankowski for the 3rd line and that's where we need a shot in the arm the most.

I mean honestly, there are league minimum players who can produce roughly the same numbers he's been putting up, but can his intangibles push him into the $3M-$4M range?

Very interested to see how his situation shakes down.
He tailed off a bit so that will hurt him ... I think he was getting close to .43 PPG in February before he joined the rest of the forwards with a weak finish.

At .38 though he's nowhere near replacement level.

Salaries are going up, but I'd think you get him done at 2x2.75
