It's not out of respect (NFL will do whatever benefits their bottom line) as it's been set in stone since the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. I thought it was just a Saturday thing but apparently it covers Friday night as well.

Teams in general just don't play well on Thursday nights. Friday would be better as it would give teams one more day of preparation and it's shown to work pretty well for the CFL in regards to TV viewership.

Lots of coverage busts in that game resulted in all those second half points. It was more entertaining chaos, but not a well played game.

There's a phrase in gambling about fading rookie QB's and rookie head coaches on short week's. Dan Quinn isn't a rookie coach, but that was a bad spot for Washington.
