When was the last time an interesting new genre emerged(and if you say Dubstep, you can just leave the room now)? Last I can think of was 90's grunge. Before that there were new trends every 5 years or so. Now? It's mostly vapid sameness.

Grunge is terrible.

Alice in Chains, NIN (maybe that was more industrial than grunge?), Nirvana, Tool, Blind Melon, Soundgarden, etc. Seems like those were some golden years of music imo. Still stands up today and kids still listen to it today.
Pearl Jam is the worst fkn band on the planet (only thing worse than Pearl Jam is a Pearl Jam fan), so I will grant you there were some turds.

Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter is a fun song, sue me.
The lyrics are...just...ugh.
Too bad your ex don’t do it for ya
Walked in and dream came trued it for ya
Soft skin and I perfumed it for ya
I know I Mountain Dew it for ya
That morning coffee brewed it for ya
One touch and I brand newed it for ya
Too bad your ex don’t do it for ya
Walked in and dream came trued it for ya
Soft skin and I perfumed it for ya
I know I Mountain Dew it for ya

One touch and I brand newed it for ya
Kinda great

Those all are terrible. But again, I think most music sucks so I’m probably a terrible person to ask.
Some songwriters will spend weeks selecting the perfect word for a line, while it seems others just glance around their desk. "I know! I Mountain Dew it for ya! Ya! Nailed it!"

Most interesting new music these days really plays on dissonance and polyrhythm.

I think there's like only one or two actual bands represented in top 100 billboard rankings these days so it's hard to expect new genres when bands are followed by fragmented listening audiences. There's still a lot of really good bands out there but the average listener isn't going to hear them on normal airwaves. Right now a pop musician doesn't need collaborators as they can make the music on their laptop and add their lyrics. Music companies love not having to deal with several collaborators to split the money and deal with multiple egos so this is the kind of stuff that the big companies promote and it's what gets on the airwaves.

"Switch it up like Nintendo" is the "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." of this time.
