Frolik isn't soft. He just has a hard ceiling on his offensive production.

Agreed. He's tougher than non-Euro like Jankowski, Monahan, Neal, etc.

Makes no sense as you weaken a part of the team that needs to be better and strengthen a part of the team that is already elite.

Trade Brodie by all means, but deal him for something the team needs.
I find the defensive depth a strength, not the other way around. This will give the Flames another talented young winger, that will produce and give you more creativity on the PP. Both first line and PP really struggled after the all star break, and this could give them another option.
Finally, I said that it is the type of trade the leafs will be looking to make. I doubt they would want a defender with one year left on his contract, when they can get him at the deadline for cap reasons.

And nylander provided very little offense. Kapanen neber pushed back offensively. The leafs have center depth so its not like kapanen was playing with scrubs. I dont think kapanen is a legit #2 or higher winger.

He didn’t do it enough I year 1 as a Flames but Frolik is not and has not played a “tougher” game than Neal who has always been a physical and sneaky dirty player.

In a Flames uniform there’s is absolutely nothing that James Neal has done better than Michael Frolik.

Yeah i worded that poorly.

I mean not just defensemen (though Brodie certainly qualifies in that dep't as well), but more so team defense. I think its pretty universally agreed that this club is softer than a wet paper towel when the going gets tough. I think the biggest part of that is guys that can board battle and stand up the opposition while defending. At times it was like watching a Globetrotters practice with the Avs, as no one would take the body or sacrifice their own to break up the passes. It was stick checks and fly bys which ended up with Smith looking like he was in some sort of shooting gallery.

So you have to add/upgrade a guy or two up front who will play that way and drag the others along with him in doing so.

I don't know who that might be or if there is even one of them available in trade. What I do know is that its a need that has to be addressed by the GM, and without a doubt Brodie would be the most attractive trading chip at his disposal without dipping into the core players.

James Neal has absolutely done better at making money than Michael Frolik.

$40mil vs $30mil. Not that dramatic.

James Neal will also be making $5.75 million till he's 35. Frolik will not be doing that.

Factor in Neal’s inevitable buyout as well

He isn’t playing out that contract

Well Frolik is not exactly bad at making money. He has done just fine whereas the difference on the ice while playing for the Flames is rather dramatic.

And I suspect Frolik could get a nice contract playing in Europe after this one if that’s what he wants. Not that he’s necessarily done in the NHL.

New Jersey has 35M in cap space and needs NHL players, especially at forward.

They have 3 second round picks.

The difference between 0 and 10 is great the difference between $40M and $30M not so great, especially when you figure in taxes, escrow payments etc.

I would sure think not. Over .5 points per game, +24, reliably the best or among the best conditioned on the team, and just turned 31.

Guys who play a 200 foot game and can contribute in many areas are often more highly valued by GMs than by the experts on CP
