Ahhhh Xander just hit the water on 16. Just took a huge pile of pressure off Hideki.

Wow. Puts his drop over the green. Schauffle falling apart. Hideki opened the door for him and he is running head first into the door frame

I don't mind the initial water shot by Xander, I get it. Three holes left, two shots back, he knew he had to make a move, he couldn't rely on Hideki having another bad hole.

Was trying for a 2, off by a bit, tourny over. But I'm okay with that approach to trying to get there that late in the round.

Hideki with the big dick play smashing driver on the 72nd hole.

As bad as the day was for Connors he salvaged two late ones to finish T8th which is two spots better than last year and get himself back next year. Keep moving up two places every year and it will be a nice run here for him.

No matter how a masters tournament finishes there's always a very special feeling when the winner walks to the 18th green and makes his putts.

It was nice to seem him tearing up as he walked to the clubhouse. This will be on the same level in Japan as Weir winning the Masters was to Canada.

The drama lasted from the 15th green to the 16th tee. Too bad for Xander on 16. He didn’t have to try and hit it stiff on every hole but also sounds like he didn’t hit it that pure and shot kind of ballooned on him.

Conners is in the OWGR top 50. He'd be in anyways. Hughes is just outside so will need to play well for the rest of 2021 or make the tour finals again.

I take back my earlier comment. Xander feels like he flushed his shot on 16, blaming the wind and maybe admitting he should play a little different shot there.

That tournament a lot easier to lose than it is to win.

Just watching the youtube video of the full masters day 4 when Weir won in 2003. Two things that are sticking out to me right now. Weir is making the famous walk up to the 18th with the crowd rising and cheering and they cut to a Tiger Woods interview right in the middle.

And during Tiger Woods interview they ask him if he would have went driver on a hole that he botched and Tiger amazingly says "No, Steve (his caddie) thought that would be better, I wanted to go iron". He softens it with "Ultimately it's the players decision". But what a dooshbag thing to disclose in an interview. Wow.

It was infuriating trying to watch Weir that Masters, in that as soon as he dropped out of the lead, he would be shown sparingly.

Woods meanwhile. Every stroke. Replay of his last birdie. Or what he did last round on that hole. To be able to watch Weir in full that Sunday as he grabbed and held on to the lead was such a rare experience. Still he got 1/2 the coverage of Tiger that day. Who finished how many back?

Also how clutch was Weir’s par save on 18? After he left the birdie putt ridiculously short.

Then luckily didn’t need to be clutch in the playoffs as his opponent self destructed.

The Canadian way!

That is what I remember. Such a clutch back 9. No 2 putt birdies for Weir so he had to be so precise with his wedges and putter. He made everything he needed to make.

Being a golf design snob I enjoy my fix of the Fried Egg. And part of what I like is the theory behind certain design and implications of changes.

There was a designer who talked about who the only thing the Top 10 courses in America have in common is that they've constantly changed over their history. Even the great Augusta National has changed significantly: reversing the 9s, different mounding, 16 used to be on the left of the pond, etc.

Anyway, the 10th. Thoughts on a "restoration":

https://twitter.com/user/status/1381344392343076871

Opening up the right (guys kept finding that tree path anyway) allows more shots attacking the hole, potentially bringing the pond back into play. The bunkers are 315-330 from the tee, so if you can clear them safely, you are rewarded with a much better angle into the green, offering a chance to attack pins.

Maybe it's a change that disproportionately rewards big hitters, and takes away some of the punishment. But with how few players have hit it into the pond over the past years, most players are just going with the short right bailout. Some of the most exciting shots have been from players getting lucky and finding that cut line int he trees. Now players finding the angle might spray too far right and they're in real trouble. Brings in a new element of risk and reward to a hole that's lost a bit of drama.
