Nothing against Marleau, but that hit....no charging, no boarding, no leaving his feet, you rarely see a hit that clean yet punishing these days.
I'm sure Marleau will tell you that it was his fault. He wasnt paying enough attention and Sarich's eyes were like something out of Looney-Tunes...they just lit up.
And one of the rare times I'll give credit to NHL referees. No penalty to Sarich. The hit was clean and legal.

That seemed to go under the radar - it's a pretty big accomplishment as well.

Only 5 more to pass Luongo, too.
Roy 551 probably out of reach, but possible. Would need 3x 20 win seasons (or 2x 30W) and he turns 37 in November.

I think Marleau is more deserving than right time/place guys like Lowe, Gillies, Anderson.
I'd say his achievements are more remarkable than Federko, Andreychuk, Housley, Ciccarelli, Langway, Sundin, Mullen, D Savard, etc.
Being better than the worst isn't a great argument, but it's better than best player from __ country or for ___ team.

He was one guy, for some reason, I always thought may end up on the Flames (like Sean Burke, way back when) somehow. Just an honest, seemingly down to earth, solid professional.
There's some luck involved with injuries, but to play that many games, you have to have proper and professional preparation, training and attitude, not just for the good years, but perseverance during and after the bad ones. Especially with all the good teams SJ had but not able to get over the hump in the Sutter/Wilson/McLellan days.

Mainly because he’s played for teams I don’t like. It’s not like I hate the guy or have any ill will towards him. Just never was a big of his is all.

For me, it is because Marleau is just such a vanilla player.
...that, and the whole "SJ Sharks" thing.

Nothing against Marleau but I’ll be disappointed to see Howe’s record fall. I grew up a Wings’ fan and Howe was a hero. Oh well, records are meant to be broken.

Absolutely one of the most vanilla guys to ever play in the league. Reminds me of Ned Flanders on skates.

This made me curious as to how long Gordie has held the record. Not just 1,767, but when he moved into first place in games played.
It turns out, that Howe was the first player in NHL history to play 1,000 games and that was when he took the record. Ted Lindsay originally retired at the end of the 1959-60 season with 999 games played (he came back for one season in 1964-65 and hit the 1,000 game milestone, but Gordie was already in first place by then).
Gordie played his 1,000th game on November 27, 1961 (oddly enough, exactly one year to the day after he became the first player in NHL history to hit 1,000 points). That means he was in first place for almost a full 60 years.
Over the years, many others crossed the 1,000 mark after Gordie, but he always stayed ahead of the pack.
When Gordie finally hung them up for good in 1980, second place on the all-time games played list was Alex Delvecchio, who retired in 1974 with 1,550 games played. Now, Delvecchio is 16th overall, 4 games behind Jarome Iginla, who is 15th.

If I remember correctly Sarich was actually called for elbowing on that hit.
Weirdly enough I don't think that gets called these days.

I always pictured the person who breaks Gordie's games played record to also finish top 10 in scoring too. I was surprised when I looked at his stats that he only finished with a point per game or better 3 times in his career. He was a good consistent producer but not as much as I had imagined.

I don’t believe that’s correct.
San Jose was penalized for the post hit retaliation and the Flames scored on the ensuing powerplay, igniting the 3 goal comeback.

Brodeur's 651 wins is definitely out of reach. I think Fleury can last 3 more seasons and overtake Roy for 2nd place.

Doesn't seem like he's ready to pack it in? Will he hit 1800-1900 before he retires?
