I just hope if we trade any key pieces, particularly younger ones, that we get youth back in return. It's a young man's game now, and I wouldn't want to go back to the Sutter years where we traded our youth for older players. I think at one point, we were one of the top 2 oldest teams....
I think if anything the Flames would be looking to trade Hanifin for a young top 6 forward. If you believe the rumors, they had him on the table for Hall last season.
Maybe things have changed, but if they are high on Valimaki and believe he can shoot right into the top 4, I could easily see them using Hanifin for an upgrade in the top 6 if a team has a forward like that available and needs a young top 4 dman.
The obsession with trading Hanifin is getting a bit much.
How else do you suggest improving the top 6? Or are you happy with the same forward group that has consistently been below average for multiple post seasons in a row?
Hanifin makes a lot of sense as you need to give to get. I feel posters get so attached to players but forget if you trade him you're bringing in someone who is hopefully equally or more talented to help your team and hopefully addressing a bigger area of need that ultimately makes your team better.
I don't want to fall in love with bottom pairing players, but I like the cut of this guy's jib.

If it wasn’t for this uncertainty, with most likely a compressed schedule, taxi squads, increased potential for injuries, etc. I would not really give it much thought. The fact that he can apparently play RD effectively provides some opt and flexibility..

I like what Treliving is doing here. He's building up a cadre of extra defenders for the inevitable injuries the upcoming condensed season will bring. Playing 3 games in 4 nights is likely to happen often and having a few guys with experiance to move up in emergencies is critical. It seems the scouting staff and management just want competent 6-7 type guys regardless of whether they shoot R or L.
Take a look the Oiers blueline "depth" they've already lost Klefbom and can barely ice 3 experianced defenders and that includes Bear a sophomore. Their farm is stocked with juniors. Their D and Goaltending is very suspect and in a condensed format they will suffer injuries but unlike Calgary they have nothing to throw in but green untested rookies.
