Default Any electricians here?

I had a ceiling fan fall in my house (not installed by me) and when it fell i believe the wires touched together and flipped the breaker. After reinstalling, even with the breaker flipped back on, I’m not getting any power to those wires.

Any suggestions? Much appreciated in advance.

Did you turn the breaker all the way off then back to the on position? If there is power (how did you test?) then probably a connection broke during the fall.

Yes, the lights next to the bed are on the same breaker, they are working. Just the wires from the fan. I have one of those voltage testing pens.

I'm a third year apprentice from days gone by, but circuits are still circuits. Kind of an odd one, you are sure that the fan and the lights mentioned are on the same breaker? I'm guessing that the leads to the fan motor are stranded wire, the wires that the fan wires were connected to in the octagon box...are they solid or stranded?

They are solid wire coming out of the box. I was fairly positive they were from the same circuit, could be wrong. I tried resetting all breakers to off and then back on, still nothing from those wires.

Sounds like a transistor got cooked inside the fan when it shorted out, don't throw it out though as there also could be a reset circuit inside that protects the board from frying, if you can get it apart, follow the hot wire and see if there's small thermostat between the exit wire and the board, it will have a small "dot" you need to press in with a paper clip to fix, plenty of items now have these including microwaves, coffee makers etc. I almost threw out my keurig when it died until I took it apart and found the easy fix.

Thats super weird, I would test with an actual voltage meter and not a pen. Do you get power to the switch?

Also dont do anything you dont feel comfortable with.

What kind of wall switch controls the fan?

One of those slider style for fans that has 0-1-2-3 for speed settings.

Yep, pull the plate off, take out the switch, the white wires will be wire nutted in the back of the box, ground does not matter, if you can, using your test meter, check for 110 power on both of the black wires attached to the switch. Could be stranded leads to the body of the switch and not a screw connection. These leads will be wire nutted to black wires, check the connection there as well as power.

Yep that's all good advice from Yikes. The electronics in some fan control switches can be quite sensitive depending on the type of switch. The short circuit could have potentially fried either the switch, the fan or possibly both.

Thank you everybody for the advice. I didn't even think to check the switch, and I bet that is probably the issue. I'll check tonight after work and update if I can get this working or not!

Above all, as a person that has been zapped numerous times working in the trade...electricity is high on my list of things I respect and am pretty careful around.

Yeah it only takes once to become permanently aware of what 60Hz is.

Having been shocked to the point of going to a hospital back in my construction days, don't mess around with it if you're uncomfortable with the work. 208V was enough to smack me around a bit and 120V could do it too under the right circumstances.

We aren't permitted to talk about that here.
