Default Travel Advice: Alabama & Mississippi

Hi all,

I know, another travel thread! I'm looking for advice on places to visit in Alabama or Mississippi. My initial searches haven't tossed up one thing or place that's excited me. I have to be missing something?

I will be in Nashville June 9th-12th for CMA fest and the planned to drive down to New Orleans before flying back to the UK.

I was hoping to spend 2-3 days breaking up the drive and experiencing the south. At this rate, I'm thinking I might be better off just getting straight down to Louisiana (other than a stop to take a few pictures of the mighty Mississippi).

Any and all thoughts appreciated on places to go, things to do etc.

P.S. I'll be with my wife, so getting some overalls, a bowl cut, and heading to a high school football game probably won't go over well.

Cheers!

Great states. See that you are driving, and going to see some music. Excellent ideas. Repeat both every day and night.

You will have a Blast at CMA fest! I've been twice and will def. go again! hopefully you don't mind rowdiness because it is a bunch of drunk 20somethings and is pretty funny to watch if you are not drinking! as far as Alabama and Miss I don't really have anything other than it would be pretty neat to do a tour of Bryant Denny Stadium in Alabama where the Tide play it's pretty historic! enjoy the show!

Serious question: Are you black?

I'm white, and I don't feel safe driving in Mississippi after dark. '

Somewhat not-serious question: Can you ditch the wife?

Ole' Miss sorority girls are a sight to behold.

Speaking of, if you have any interest in William Faulkner, I think that there may be some things about his life in and around Oxford (Mississippi, that is).

Consider looking up back issues of Southern Living magazines on the internet and seeing what they have to say about various places on your proposed road trip. Most of their recommendations are pretty high-brow and are unlikely to result in extreme or long-term disappointment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_Shoals,_Alabama

Muscle Shoals is known for recording many hit songs from the 1960s to today at two studios: FAME Studios, founded by Rick Hall, where Arthur Alexander, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and numerous others recorded; and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, founded by the musicians known as The Swampers, which developed work for Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, the Rolling Stones and others. While the music from the area is often referred to as the "Muscle Shoals Sound", all four of the Quad Cities have significantly contributed to the area's musical history.

Fans of Muscle Shoals music visit the local landmarks. While most of the city's recording studios are still active, the majority will allow tours with an appointment.[citation needed] Further, a number of rock, R&B and country music celebrities have homes in the area surrounding Muscle Shoals (Tuscumbia), or riverside estates along the Tennessee River, and often perform in area nightclubs, typically rehearsing new material.

Is CMA fest the same as Fan Fare back in the day?

Church blew up in Birmingham
Four little black girls killed for no goddamn good reason
All this hate and violence can't come to no good end
A stain on the good name.
A whole lot of good people dragged threw the blood and glass
Blood stains on their good names and all of us take the blame

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Wilson Pickett comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

And out in California, a rock star from Canada writes a couple of great songs about the
Bad #### that went down
"Southern Man" and "Alabama" certainly told some truth
But there were a lot of good folks down here and Neil Young wasn't around

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town
To record with Jimmy Johnson at Muscle Shoals Sound
And they met some real good people, not racist pieces of ####
And they wrote a song about it and that song became a hit

Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil
Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking there minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil

Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So He wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the lord

And Neil helped carry Ronnie in his casket to the ground
And to my way of thinking, us southern men need both of them around

Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking their minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil

I have nothing to add except I'm planning on going to Tuscaloosa in 2017 for the Bama vs LSU game so I'm curious what people have to say about traveling down there. Keep us updated!

I did that game in 2013 and it was amazing. 100k in the stadium, 50k outside drinking.

Auburn is a great town. You can check out Jordan Hare stadium, golf at some nice courses or there's lots to do and see within a couple hour drive.

I enjoyed Oxford, MS and Mobile, AL.

As hinted at above, Oxford is the "hometown" (not born there I don't think, but resided there) of William Faulkner, and his old house is a heritage site, and his grave is in the local cemetery.

Great bookstore in Oxford that's said to have the most first editions of anywhere around (in the country? I don't know).

Walking around the Ole Miss campus makes you feel like you are on a movie set (cheesy teen college comedy etc.).

that's a serious question?

as a white yankee carpetbagger that lived for several years in a majority black community in south carolina, i must say i can't imagine anyone having such an opinion. seems totally absurd.

OT: Be ready to spend a lot of time on desolate highways getting to places. The couple of times I have been through that way, I only remember the desolation. Going from Birmingham up to Memphis is terribly boring.

I've been in Louisiana now for only about 2 weeks.

I have only explored New Orleans and the North Shore so far, but I can say that it's a pretty nice area,

If you want beaches near by, from what I hear, you need to check out Gulf Shores, Destin and Panama City Beach.
