Default Calgary Field House Plans Released

Plans are finally out for the newest rendition of the Calgary Field house. Looks like it has the potential to be an impressive facility for the city and is long overdue.

I'm not familiar with what other major cities have done recently, but it does seem like a bit of a miss to me not to have a full sized 400m track and maybe some tennis courts included instead of a massive amount of badminton courts.

Either way, this is great to see it may finally be close to happening.

would be great. 200M is the standard for an indoor track and would be great to have a banked indoor track in YYC!

We already have an indoor tennis facility in Calgary, and I would assume the badminton courts would also be used for pickleball (which seems to be creeping up everywhere).

EDIT: I should add -- the drawings look nice and it will certainly be a welcome addition when it finally gets built.

This city needs indoor field space in the worst way.

Looks cool I guess. Unfortunate to lose Foothills Stadium for good, ABA, and a nice little grass infield diamond. Baseball continues to be pushed to the periphery and outside the City.

It was noted in the story that it could be supported.

The plan calls for an artificial turf that would be large enough to support a full soccer field plus a warmup space or a football field or two fastball fields.

In Acadia, sure. But for a growing sport in the city there is an extreme lack on indoor courts in the North (both facilities are fully private and only offer 3-4 courts). Tennis courts would generate a lot of $$ for the facility with very little overhead. It just strikes me as odd that badminton would be such a priority when it can literally be played in any gymnasium space already in existence.

Aside from that - let's get it done. Sport in Calgary will benefit from this big time. Hopefully today's arena announcement does not mean this project will be pushed further down the line again.

I read that. There's no way the building could be set up to support a CCBC game for the Dinos or the 18U Bison's. It could be a practice facility to replace Absolute if they can have two infields, 4 60 ft pitching lanes and 8 or 10 batting cages but I doubt it since they refer to it as 'fastball'.
