Default The Case For or Against Bungalows

What do you think about buying a premium hillside bung like this one?

I'm concern about the resell market as these bungs are not really for people who have more than 1 kid.

Please don't call them bungs.

Wanna buy my beach area bungalow?

I'm concerned about the resale value of my small house (here we would call it a shotgun house) although it's not much smaller than many in the area.

I don't have a lot of stuff, but I like to be able to do my various projects without having to put the stuff away.

To that end, I had to rent a garage space.

More power to those who try to live in as small a space as possible.

Older people prefer bungalows. Easier to move around. Older usually have more $$$ so there will always be a market for that.

For younger crowd:
Bungalows have more privacy. Unless they are in a two store type neighborhood.
Going upstairs to get your kids clothes (few times a day) is not fun.
Keeping upstairs clean is harder. In a bungalow you walk by and clean as you go, in a two storey you need to make the effort to make that trip up every time you wanna clean. (does anyone every wanna clean?)
Bigger basement gives more potential to do what you want.

Just these few I though of right away.

Great for older people/people who see themselves staying in a place until older.
Install a single chair stair device and your laughing for years ahead!

I moved to a bi-level and I am a 2 story kind of guy but I don't know if I could switch back. It worked out really well while my wife was pregnant as well

Anytime your wife asks you to get something it is close by. My wife is notorious for asking me something then again as soon as I finish the first request. This was a huge pain in the 2 story.

Changing the babies diapers. Her room is right down the hall from the living room.

Getting a glass of water at night I no longer fall down the stairs while in a sleep haze.

I am not a huge bungalow fan for the following reasons:

-Most floor plans that I have seen have the bedrooms in an area where they can be visible and can hear the noise from the entertaining areas. My personal preference is to have these as separated as possible.
-They require a larger footprint on the lot, reducing your yard size.
-Depending on your lot, less rooms having certain views.

Everyone has different tastes though.

Resale will be fine due to the population getting older and the relative lack of bungalows in Calgary. If that's what you want I wouldn't avoid it for resale reasons.

I mostly agree but not on your second point. While the house does have a larger footprint, the areas that you typically find bungalows also have much larger lots, often times twice that of your typical two story house lot.

Personally, I love bungalows and would have preferred to live in one. Unfortunately because of their big foot-print, they were simply out of our price range unless we wanted to take on a massive renovation. Had to go skinny but tall instead...at least I'll work off a few calories I guess.
