Default Vintage Video Games - Quarantine Edition

Being stuck at home lately has made me dust off some old games. I have an Nvidia Shield emulating pretty much everything, and have been playing a bunch of dreamcast, but I’ve also been playing through Skyrim and Fallout Vegas. I decided though to not make a sniper build as I always seem to. Instead, in Skyrim, I made a shield character and loaded all stats into blocking. In Fallout, I tried to negotiate my way through the game.

I recently played through Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid.

And other good suggestions?

Just based on that, I'd recommend Aria of Sorrow, its sequel Dawn of Sorrow, and my personal favourite, Portrait of Ruin.

Besides that, I feel like Majora's Mask is a fitting game in these doomsday times. It's such an interesting game with the way its NPC characters grow from dismissive to panic'd over a 3 day span, and while it doesn't have hundreds of NPCs, the thirty or so it does have are nicely fleshed out. Just a masterpiece to this day. But play the N64 version because I hear the 3DS version nerfs the physics engine.

EDIT - if you're using an emulator then there are mods /rom hacks that correct the broken physics engine ^^

When my daugher was 2 1/2 she started taking an interest in the games I was playing, so I started working through the Mario catalog. She's 3 now and her favorite is Super Mario 3D World, since we can play as Peach and the "Blue Queen" (Rosalina). Also played through Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Mario 3, and Mario Baseball on GameCube. She's pretty much Mario obsessed now, wife bought her some Mario figures of all the main characters and a Princess Peach castle and those are her go-to toys now, even several months later. For a kid that usually gets tired of a new toy in a day it's a pretty big deal

Just replayed FFX. Was decent for some nostalgia, however there is a ton of time awaiting on purpose, which pisses me off. Like, in order to accomplish this small goal, you must repeatedly run to and fro from the furthest points in maps.

Now on octopath traveller... It's great.

Considering Skyrim remake mod next.

Here are some recommendations for some older games I don't see mentioned very often:
- Bucky O'Hare (NES)
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis)
- Kirby Super Star (SNES)
- Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (PS1)
- Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (PS2)
- Golden Sun (GBA)
- Wario Ware (GC)

Don't forget about Order of Ecclesia, which is my pick for the strongest of the three DS Castlevanias. My favorite to play is Dawn of Sorrow but I think that's nostalgia talking. Order is just a better built game and more creative with the glyphs.

I think this only applies if you're trying to do glitches. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone play the 3DS version of Majora's Mask because of all the quality of life changes they made. The N64 version is obtuse and rough in many places. I just played through it recently on the N64 and I really can't recommend it over the 3DS version.

The 3DS version breaks zora swimming, that right there is a pretty quick dealbreaker considering how fun that is.

Due to its prisoner-collect mechanic, I never got to the second half / "true ending" of Order of Ecclesia. I was short a prisoner or two and I had no idea where they were.

Agreed how that isn't as fun given that you need to use magic to swim quickly. However, given how poor Zora swimming is in tight space when you can't move slowly at all in the N64 version, I still prefer it. Great Bay Temple is arguably much easier thanks to the changes.

However, I wouldn't call that "breaking the physics engine". I also would argue that isn't enough of an issue to counter all these other great additions to the 3DS version:
- Setting time to the hour (I can't stress how much this improves the game!)
- More save points, and you don't have to quit when saving
- The Bomber's Notebook is way more useful because it tracks EVERYTHING
- Gossip stones are more useful
- Goron rolling is easier to control
- Goht, Gyorg and Twinmold are more interesting fights

If we gonna go vintage, let's go all out!

That said, currently replaying FF X, and am going to take a run at the old Game Boy Final Fantasy Legend games after. Especially since I don't expect to get my FF VII Remake pre-order on time.

Incidentally, Video Game Trader is doing online ordering and curbside pick-up at their Lake Bonavista store.

Nice collection I'm a bit of a retro collector myself. I mainly collect games I like not full sets. Got a few rarer and valuable ones though. For playing I built a retropie and use the 8bitdo wireless controllers. Works really well. I also have a top loader NES with a conversion to mini-hdmi and a N64 with HDMI output. Pretty cool to play the original systems and games on original hardware on a modern TV.
Just finally finished Doom 2016 last night after 4 years. (not continuous playing. lol)

I mean if you haven't played Chrono Trigger you should really just go and do that immediately.

But a couple of titles like CT aside, the issue with the classic games now is that there's a whole cottage industry (I guess its cottage-ness is debatable) for producing games that are new, but feel like classic games. I turned my phone into a 3DS and have been using it to play Bravely Default, which is just a fantastic take on the old 90's JRPG so far. There's a bunch of those, but also platforming has come back in a huge way. Sure, the DKC games are still fun, but you could play Hollow Knight instead... so...

Yeah. For me if there's a vintage game to play, it's Jumpman on a Commadore 64 emulator.

Or that next year, 2021, games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Grand Theft Auto III will be 20 years old. You know what games were 20 years old when those games came out? Stuff like Donkey Kong and Galaga in arcades. Little bit of perspective, haha.

Huh. Assumed that was a typo and you meant the original.

Nope. I'm just getting old.

For Genesis

Sonic trilogy, there is a pinball game also that's a bit odd, and not bad.
Forgotten Worlds
Golden Axe
Flashback
The Last Battle
Michael Jackson Moonwalker
Super Monaco Grand Prix 1 and 2
Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3

Probably a few others that I'm missing off the top of my head.

Desert and Jungle strike were two others that were not bad. You really can identify as an attack helicopter in those games.
