Icon48 2021 Lady Byng Finalists

I didn't see a thread for this. Brian Burke once said he won't want of these nominees on his team I believe.

Finalists Are:

Auston Matthews C - Toronto Maple Leafs
Jaccob Slavin D - Carolina Hurricanes
Jared Spurgeon D - Minnesota Wild

The award is given annually to the player voted best to combine sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct and ability as voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. The winner will be announced as part of the 2021 NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone during the Stanley Cup Semifinals or Stanley Cup Final.

Matthews-LOL

I dunno about not wanting any Lady Byng winner but a dman Byng winner seems kind of odd to me.

The fact that Slavin only has 2 PIMS while being the best defensive defenseman in the league is extremely impressive.

Add the fact that he's also generally very polite, friendly, good in the community, etc., I think it's his award to lose.

Funny if the Lady Byng winner ended up finishing his year on a 4 game suspension.

Wait, no oiler elite players, this a Outrage! The league is out to get them, both the glamor twins should each be given one.

According to the commentary tonight that one penalty was for puck over the glass. No fouls against another player.

It takes a special talent to be "gentlemanly" when you don't have pants on.

I'd like to tout Blackhawk legend Stan Mikita. In 1963-4 3rd in PIMS, in 1964-5 7th in PIMS. The myth says that one of his kids asked Stan why he'd spend so much time, alone, away from his teammates, in the penalty box. Stan was embarrassed by the question, and so, won back to back Lady Byngs in 1967 and 1968.

I feel like this is pretty strong evidence that playing a defensively effective, clean game is possible and therefore the league doesn't need selective enforcement of penalties. Players would adapt, and defensive play would survive.

Lindstrom was the master of this. Best Dman of his generation, who could dominate, but rarely took any penalties.

My vote goes to Matthews. I true Lady Byng winner needs to be gentlemanly on and off the ice.

Matthews sells drugs to kids AT COST. You've got to appreciate his contributions to the community.

Damien Cox
@DamoSpin
Really looking forward to hear the rationale of any writer who gave Slavin a first place vote over McDavid and/or Matthews. Anybody who did so deserves to lose their vote. This is a travesty.

Oh sorry, I guess I was wrong about Slavin.

Damien Cox is one of the biggest clowns out there. McDavid elbowed someone in the face this year. Real gentlemanly..
