Who will be responsible for demonstrative losses, i.e overruns? What happens if we find out that CDN$575 million is nowhere near enough to build a state of the art facility?

There's no telling what the actual construction cost will be. Either the City or the Owners of the Calgary Flames will have to bare the cost of such a proposed deal.

The price is now $2.5 billion because the Flames want to build it entirely out of wood.

I didn’t realize that pretty much every major sport is dying out.

You’ll need to substantiate that one with facts.

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with the arena, but have to wonder if there is some intangible benefit to having the Flames stay with a new arena? Like, when the Jets left Winnipeg did the city feel some type of loss? Clearly it had some effect given that they eventually got them back (albeit I’m not clear on the details). It’s moot at this point, but just curious is all.

Not sure how moot the point is. I will feel much more comfortable when construction actually begins. Until then nothing is off the table.

Is there any inside info whatsoever with how progress is going? Are they any closer to reaching a deal or is this going to fall apart? I’m curious if they are even talking/negotiating. Things will have to move if they even want to break ground in the fall.

There won't be much inside info getting out with how tightly CMLC runs the ship.

The two sides are still meeting and having conversations, which is obviously a good thing. They had hoped to have things ironed out by start of June in terms of allocating the extra costs, but the fact that they are still at the table means their is common ground to be had. This is from a conversation with one of the directors of one of the lead design and engineering firms.

Could this have an impact on a new flames arena?

No, those are two completely different projects. It's moreso part of the fieldhouse project that's part of the four current major capital projects for the city.

But it could lead to the much needed renovations to McMahon. Ideally the build out of the area could pay out the costs for that.

They are now down to being "only" a few million dollars apart. One of the big remaining obstacles is an investment in traffic patterns and improvement in the ease of traffic egress and ingress.

that should be something the city should pay for, I would think.

Not necessarily. If a development is such that it requires exceptional changes in the flow of traffic, it's not unusual for the developer to be responsible for the costs associated therewith, or at least a portion of them.

has anyone bothered to ask the University of Calgary if they have the money to cover their share of the cost?

I think the problem with that is the University of Calgary probably doesn't even want the stadium to be there quite frankly. And they backed out of funding for the fieldhouse due to provincial funding cuts. So they are highly uninterested in putting any funding to the stadium that they would probably just tear down, and build a smaller one on the campus itself.

Yes, they partnered with the city to work on developing the plan: https://ucalgary.ca/news/ucalgary-an...-mcmahon-lands

that's going to go over well if the school puts money toward a stadium with all the cuts and layoffs going on.

edit: is says in your article that The future of McMahon Stadium itself is outside the scope of this project.

Nenshi says council will be updated on arena talks next week

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...066802?cmp=rss

If you want to read the article, it is mostly about whether CMLC will be managing the project or not.

Universities spending money that should be allocated elsewhere? That could never happen! Never!!

CMLC managing the development was seen by a lot on council as a big plus, as they had managed the library and much of the development all around the East Village.

Also, Nenshi says in the article that the August 1 groundbreaking likely won't happen on that date.
