Saints off-seasons, man... they're never quiet.
|
So the Tennessee Titans have won the Clowney sweepstakes, reuniting him with Mike Vrabel. Sounds like a 1 year, $15 million contract.

The Saints were giving a very strong push to the end, but in usual Saints fashion, they had a set price they refused to budge on (1 yr, $10 million). Not surprisingly, Clowney wanted the bigger offer.

looks like the Saints wanted to get creative to get Clowney and attempted a "sign and trade" scenario with another team (Browns apparently). NFL said no.

Well, the Saints seem well above the cap so paying an extra 50% for Clowney wasn't likely doable because of that.
Read another article where a few teams offered him $15MM but he didn't want to go to those teams.
Of the handful of teams he did want to go to, Seattle was willing to pay $10-12MM, Clowney clearly wanted that $15M and nothing less.

Yeah, it came down to money. Actually the Saints reportedly had a rather creative workaround and a willing other organization to make it work, but the NFL nixed it in the end, so Clowney just signed with Tennessee. I'll link the article, its pretty wild actually.
https://www.nfl.com/news/inside-wild...deveon-clowney
- I get why the league blocked it, but still, the Saints and the NFL have the pettiest relationship..
EDIT: For those too lazy or uninterested to click the link, basically it was going to be a sign & trade with ''Team X'' (rumoured to be the Cleveland Browns, who have a history with this type of thing in the Osweiler deal). They would sign Clowney at his requested $15 million for 1 year.
Team X would then eat $5 million of it and trade him to New Orleans, where the Saints would send back a 2nd round pick, and possibly a roster player (rumoured to be former 2016 1st round pick, DT Sheldon Rankins), and cover the final $10 million. But the NFL squashed it.

@RapSheet:
Sources: The #AZCardinals are making star WR DeAndre Hopkins the highest paid non-QB ever, giving him a 2-year contract extension worth $54.5M in new money -- $27.25M per year. Hopkins, who did the deal himself, gets $42.75M guaranteed at signing.

Titans with Clowney are going to be scary. I haven't been this excited in the Titans since Air McNair and Eddie George were playing.

Speculation Von is out for the year for the Broncos. They may contend with the bears and jags for Lawrence.

That would be on par with with your taste in Hockey teams.

Kaepernick back in madden 21 - great.
Kaepernick having a better rating than like half the starting QBs - hilarious.

As you say, the highest paid non QB in the league. And the guy doesn’t have an agent.
That might help explain the poor return on the trade for the Texans, if that’s what he was looking for. All while still under contract.
Don’t think this contract will work out too well for Arizona.

Drinks are on Jalen Ramsey. How do the Rams continue to give out these massive contracts? Eventually it’s got to be time to pay the fiddler, right?

^^I mean the Rams are pretty much the worst thing you can be, probably not good enough to win it all, but there are enough quality players tied up in contracts that are difficult to get out of that they can't go full tank/rebuild for a few years. Unless Goff actually becomes a franchise QB instead of being paid like one they are basically screwed.

Quite a few people picking Alex Smith for comeback player of the year. I hope it happens. Alex Smith was a really good guy who did a lot to help the Chiefs get turned around and is one of the best people in the NFL. I'm rooting for him.

The Golden Knights have many casual fans too. So annoying.
I understand Las Vegas is a sexy choice.
I say dare to be different. Choose the least sexy city.

That would also kind of fit with his hockey team choice.

The Raiders have won multiple championships and were in the Super Bowl last decade. The Browns or Lions are more akin to the Jets as teams that have never won anything.

The Browns have 8 Championships and moved 1 time. Jim Brown! Otto Graham! [yes, I'm old!]
The Raiders have 4 Championships and have moved 3 times.
