Not sure if anyone has heard of this or really cares too much. But there is likely going to be a blockade on Memorial Drive this afternoon at 4pm right around the Poppy Plaza. They really yanked a few chains in Edmonton this morning...

I would imagine it could get pretty ugly if they are allowed to hang out for an hour or so today.

A bigger question might be what do you think of this sort of thing? It's obviously not a legal, safe or fair tactic yet we seem to tolerate it quite nicely.

Oops, I see it was mentioned in the Climate Change thread, but just note that it is planned for Calgary this afternoon too.

It shouldn't be tolerated and should be dealt with quickly by police.

I think that it is alright for them to protest. You can protest whatever you want. But they are jaywalking. Cite them, warn them, warn them again to take their protest to the sidewalk, then take them away so that they can be emotional martyrs to their cause. Everyone wins.

Seems like good logic. Block the road, cause a massive backup of thousands of cars that will just idle and pollute more in order to try and achieve lower emissions. Gridlocking people trying to get to work or get home doesn't seem like the best way to sway them to your cause, I doubt anyone has ever though "oh, I loved being intentionally stuck in traffic for hours, I'm going to go join the people who mad eit happen".

Ho-boy, if they block Memorial at 10th Street (right at Poppy Plaza) at 4pm that will destroy traffic. Work later if you'll be affected (or just post on CP).

The Police in Edmonton were completely emasculated by the protest, they tried to negotiate and were told that there was no negotiation so the police stood back and let it happen.

I agree with the fines idea.

don't these people have jobs? Or is there job to prevent people from getting to theirs?

So are we going to have climate marches every week now by various groups? I'm not against valid protests, but this seems to be causing major disruption, and as usual, the agenda is either unclear, unrealistic, or idiotic.
And living in Vancouver the scale of the disruption gets pretty significant.

I think these "activists" deserve to get mocked relentlessly by normal society. These people thinking they are on par with civil rights marches is hilarious and insane.

It seems really extraordinarily dangerous too. Emergency vehicles getting caught in that mess would be a disaster.

If they were smart instead of standing in the road like a bunch of idiots they could just organize a continuous crossing then they aren't doing anything illegal and can carry a nice banner that is streaming across the street.

I would be more worried about people on the edge of a mental break down stuck in this just deciding to hit the gas. Anger will make people do crazy things.

Memorial is the best route to a lot of hospitals from a lot of places in the city. An ambulance would not even have to be stuck in the mess but just rerouted around it and you'd have a very serious health risk caused by this. But I am pretty surprised no one in Edmonton snapped.

I think our police would be smart to be there before hand and just stop anyone from entering the road way. Let them protest on the side of the road like other people. Just establish some sort of guidance right off the bat since they know it's coming.

Why should people have to disperse. We have the freedom of assembly. They should be ticked for what ever violations they are committing under the various traffic acts and safety bylaws but ordering them to disperse seems to be a violation of their rights.

They should enforce laws as written.
