Orpik was a stud in the playoffs for the caps, but many who watched the caps during the regular season felt Orpik was showing his age.
I think the Caps now have cap space of 21 million with Orpik off the books, so this ensures they'll sign both Carlson and Kempney to shore up the defence. It also opens up space for the caps to let Djoos and Bowney garner more time during the regular season.
Overall this is a big win for the caps.
