Mardi Gras, New Orleans - Advice
Looking for some help and advice on where to stay, what to do during Mardi Gras 2015? We were looking at going for the 13th-21st with some friends, but I have nowhere to start. Areas to stay, places to see. Ideally we would like to spend a fortune on the hotel but I'm curious of what others who've been there, say about the place. Thanks.

8 friends and I went this year and had an absolute blast. I would stay somewhere right near or in the French Quarter. We stayed at the Sheraton on Canal St and enjoyed the location and the hotel. Hotels are pretty pricey for Mardi Gras so I would book soon if you can. I would order beads/flashy lights from Amazon.com and have all of your stuff shipped to the hotel. There are balcony parties, it's really up to you if you do them, they can be fun but it's mostly for the newbies, most of the action happens down on the street.
New Orleans is nuts, it's the craziest party you will ever go to, some people can't handle the Vegas but New Orleans is worse, you will be partying 24/7 as the bars are open 24 hours.
I would watch your bags for pickpockets, a couple friends of ours got pick pocketed.
The food in New Orleans is unreal so make sure you go and check out as many restaurants as you can!
Feel free to ask any more questions.

Is the beer on Bourbon still all 3 for 1 during Mardi Gras?
It is so easy to get blitzed for so cheap over there. Didn't go during Mardi Gras, but I would love to get back.

I loved NOLA so much I went 3 times during an 18 month span! Never during Mardi Gras though.

Bring beads, condoms, and an extra liver.

I moved to New Orleans right before Mardi Gras 2016.
It depends I guess on what you want to do? Are you single? Going with friends? Girlfriend? What sort of stuff do you want to do?
I would say make sure to check out more of the city than the French Quarter... but don't get too adventurous, because a lot of the area is a bit dodgy.

Only have 1 Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's - 2 or more and you will not be a happy camper the next morning.

Befriend a salesman at Schlumberger.
They throw some killer parties during Mardi Gras.
Don't flash money around at "cheap" liquer stores. Friends got robbed at gun point.
Its a fun time.

I'm heading there on Friday for the weekend (Saints and Raiders) and business extending into next week. Friends and colleagues have suggested the following:
• Have a Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s (as mentioned, only one!!, is the most common advice)
• Soft Shell Crabs at Ralph and Kacoos
• Beignets at Café Du Monde
• Paddle wheeler cruise on the Mississippi
• Carriage Ride through the French Quarter (at night), they depart from Jackson Square on the Decatur Street side
• City Bus Tour of the Ninth Ward, Cemeteries, etc.
• Ride the Green Tram through the Garden District
• Ride the Red Streetcar along Canal Street to City Park (more beignets there!), and of course
• Sample some Bourbon at the Bourbon House on Bourbon Street

If you only drink one hurricane you're a coward.

As a 3 hurricane survivor, I beg to differ. (I get a headache just thinking about that hangover)

New Orleans is a great town. It's one of the few places around that has some truly distinct character, and most of the people there are really friendly and down to earth.
I happened to be there during Jazz Fest, and was a really awesome event. If you can catch a good zydeco or jazz performance, I'd definitely recommend it.
There are definitely some sketchy parts in town, but to me those were a lot more authentic than what you got on Bourbon Street. Bourbon Street was my least favorite part. That area is a bit of a tourist trap for the most part.
I'd recommend doing a swamp tour...you get to ride on a sweet airboat and see a ton of crocodiles....you may also still see a few structures floating around from Katrina. Hire a smaller local company though, not one of those touristy-trap group tours.
Riding a street car was fun. There was also a free ferry you can take across the river. Grilled gator was tasty. Getting a bag of crawfish is a nice snack too.

Heading down with the wife. Definitely looking to party, as well as do some touristy things.
Regarding the actual Mardi Gras event... do you just stroll around the streets and look at boobs, or is there tickets for hosted parties that I should be looking into?
