I agree with those that maintain guys have been given opportunity and just haven't grabbed - likely because they simply aren't good enough. And part of that simply is they haven't drafted many dmen high.

It bears mentioning that the Flames have not drafted a defenseman in the first round of the entry draft since 2009 (that is one defenseman in eight selections), and only three since 2000. We shouldn't be altogether surprised that there have only been a handful to graduate.

That's not good. He can chase free agency after next season

Meh. Johnny and Janko did the same. Let him develop more and sign him when his year is over

He made the right choice for himself, but damn. I doubt he picks the Flames when he just has to wait a few more months to be the most sought-after college UFA since Schultz, Hayes or Vesey.

Granteed, you're totally right. I can't see why a guy born in Leduc would want to come play for the Calgary Flames a couple of hours away from his hometown.

Unless there appears to be openings for him in the immediate future he's probably going to pick his spot as he has a right to do which could still be Calgary. Unfortunately this is the risk with drafting college players. Really this seems to be a pretty good route for good young players as you can get your post secondary education and bypass the draft.

Be a Stockton Heat until the end of your ELC or be an immediate top 6 on the Edmonton Oilers?
Pretty easy choice for a Leduc kid.

Not exactly. It is true that Jankowski opted to return to Providence for his senior year, but Gaudreau signed with the Flames at the first opportunity after three years at BC.

Johnny did not go back for his final year. Only did 3 years.

Not ideal...
But like others have mentioned, he's an Alberta kid.... Plus the ELC, where Calgary reallly can't get outbid by other teams purely on total monies offered suggests that we have a good shot to sign him anyways
At least as good as anyone else if not slightly better

Not really. It's not uncommon that when a player takes Hickey's route he signs with a different team than the one that drafted him. We will have to see what the Flames depth on defense looks in a year but you can't fault him for looking for the best opportunity to play in the NHL and don't kid yourself that agents have a lot to say about where they sign as well. If the agent thinks there are teams that will give him a better shot he will be in the player's ear.

I'd be less worried if the Flames weren't awful at giving young defencemen a legit shot at the NHL. Why would he sign with a team that will probably keep him in the AHL until he's waiver eligible and then trade him for future considerations?

The Flames will still be in a position to sign him next spring and let him burn a year. Still, not the greatest sign that he will be a Flame in 2018.
I imagine Treliving will comment soon.

Agreed. If the Flames sign Stone in the offseason, chances are Hickey will not be a Flame next summer. Here's the minimum depth chart Hickey has to compare to when choosing other paths:
Giodano - Hamilton
Brodie - Stone
Kylington - Andersson
Fox
And chances are the Flames will congested the line-up with Bartowski, Engelland or whomever else.
So if Hickey only has to wait a few months to earn himself an NHL spot or top AHL minutes, I can't see him passing up on that
