I’m loving Duehr right now. For some reason reminds me of a less physical but little bit faster Micheal Ferland

He is none of the players listed above. If he is anything - he more like a Chris Clark.

I see some Vesa Viitakoski mixed with some Ed Ward.

He's like a slightly shorter, RH, Joe Colborne!

Love the player

My only issue is with the thread title

“Walker Frickin’ Duehr” was right there for the taking!

Having a player like Duehr in the bottom six is such a breath of fresh air. How long has this team been rotating borderline NHL vets and UFA pickups. I know we didn't draft Duehr, but having a young player like this step into a role like this and excel is just so great for the organization.

Duehr is the perfect example of why it's better to build 4th line depth from within the organization over free agency. You will never know what you have in your system if you keep signing guys like Rooney to fill depth roles.

Technically yes, but not really the same thing (NCAA @ minimum salary vs NHL UFA vet @ $1.5M)

I consider all NCAA signings to be from within our system

Rooney signed as a UFA at 29 is pretty different than an undrafted NCAA player signed at 23. Entirely different streams of development.

0.47 ppg or a 40 point player on a great contract. Found gold, and outperforming Pelletier. Kid is not going down and is going to be a FT NHLer from here on out I suspect. He basically kicked the door down.

For reference, Coleman produces about the same amount, brings about the same amount of energy and skill and play, and costs about $4.1mm more per year.

This is how the Flames have to fill these roles. By giving kids legitimate chances, not signing FA’s.

With some defensive training I see him being similar to Coleman. Dependable, fast, can score a goal or two from simply being in on the play. 15-25 goals per year, useful third liner.

But they did sign Rooney, and they did find out what they had.

You sign NHL vets to contracts that can be sent to the AHL as free depth and an insurance policy in case a young player isn't ready.

Couldn't disagree more.

Signing a free agent as insurance worked to perfection in this case.
