Is he eligible for the AHL playoffs? I thought players had to be on the roster by a specific date in order to be eligible.

Not possible. If he signs an NHL contract for this season, he's not eligible to go to the AHL.
He could sign a contract that starts next season and play in the AHL on a "try out" deal.

It's the only reason they sign.
if they don't burn a year off, may as well become a UFA.
Is the only thing Calgary can offer him that another team cannot.

If Sutter and his stubbornness don't play him can Brad force it? Fire him for breach of contract?

You have to explore it.

He's only in his second year. He could play another season in college then try again next spring to sign him.

If Treliving convinces Coronato to sign based on the premise that he gets to burn a year this season, and Sutter refuses to dress him, then yeah, that would be a firing I would think. I would think even Edwards would come down from his ivory tower for that one.

Doesn't look like he could make a save. We should trade him.

Coronato finished -3 as did both his line mates. Just one of those off games, I guess. Signing his first professional contract should go a long way to cheering him up.

I think you have to. If you directly offer him an NHL game and an automatic year off his ELC, and he chooses a 3rd year of college over that, then you have to believe he will also choose a 4th year of college.
The door is open right now, if he doesn't walk through, you have to cut your losses. And you can't wait another year, because if he still isn't signed at that point, his trade value has plummeted, because he is now only a year from being a free agent.
The hand is being dealt right now. It's all in, or fold.

Gaudreau spent 3 years at Boston College before signing. If Matt doesn’t sign I wouldn’t be too concerned this year. I haven’t seen enough of him to know if he is really NHL ready another year of college might actually be for the best.

So I am a bit unclear. If Coronato signs an ELC and plays a couple of games for the Flames, is he eligible or ineligible to play for the Wranglers when the Flames season is over?

If he doesn't sign in the next week, he's not going to sign with us period. He's clearly not ready for the NHL, but we're so desperate to get players to come to Calgary that we don't have any choice but to offer him a deal.

If he doesn't sign now, you need to explore trade possibilities. The Flames can't continuously waffle on things. If Treliving already has one foot out the door himself, he might not have the authority to trade his rights though. There would be nothing stopping him from not trying too hard to convince him to sign, just so he could trade him to whatever team he has his own sights set on.

Ineligible, he wasn’t on clear day roster. He could as another poster suggested sign an NHL contract that starts next season and play on the Wranglers as a tryout but that doesn’t burn a year towards UFA status so I doubt he does it.
