Even just the language being used tries to gloss over things. “Sexual assault”, while still bad, doesn’t sound nearly as bad as “gang rape”, which is what actually happened.

They are likely just referring to the offence under the Criminal Code. “Gang rape” is not referred to under the Criminal Code, as it’s simply covered by the definition of “sexual assault”.

I really hope Dube wasn’t involved in this. If he was he should be kicked off our team immediately.

Sad to way have to get the information out... but sounds like it may end up working.
Just really hoping Dube isn't involved.

Ask the agents if their clients were involved - seems like a productive and unbiased way to find out who was involved.

If I'm not mistaken the claim says they were all CHL players, which would eliminate Makar. and any other college players.

Yes.

But I wonder if that is possible. Can the Flames terminate his contract for an assault he committed several years before said contract was signed?

I dunno - it was an offseason event to celebrate the tourney win, so Dube as captain was likely there.

And that also means it's unlikely there were non-WJC team members.

The victim refused to say names and wants it all over with. The witch hunt will go nowhere and will be covered up. Every player agent will say their player was not involved.

Sometimes we just have to move on if that is what the victim wants.

Well, Peters was fired for pre-contract incidents. And I'm not sure that Dube hadn't signed his first deal with Calgary by then - it seems likely he had since he'd played 6 Heat games.

I won't tell the victim how to feel; but as an outsider, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if the perpetrators got off scot free.

The victim doesn’t want to proceed. The public’s desire for justice won’t do anyone any good. If names are named, it’s going to stain those players forever, regardless of whether they are guilty or not and, worse yet, the victim will be forced to relive the trauma all over again when she’s said she doesn’t want to. You can’t name names without an investigation to try and uncover the truth.

This may seem like an unfortunate side effect of the powerful covering up an assault but I don’t see how any resolution is satisfactory to anyone at this point.

And just to be clear these are unproven allegations. Lots of people settle even when innocent to avoid the bad press and avoid messy trials, so we can’t even point to the settlement as a sign of guilt.

But there are obviously some disturbing trends here. If what I’ve read is true about how the money works, Hockey Canada using tax dollars and your minor hockey fees to payoff rape victims is ####ed it. Not to mention the obvious one, which is yet another troubling incident involving major junior hockey in this country and sports/sexual assault in general.

It’s just sad all around to be honest.

I DO NOT care if the victim does not want to proceed (edit: I do care, I mean that she should not have to drive the bus on this).

Hockey Canada, the NHL and the CHL should be investigating and suspending/banning these players from every playing again.

####. Them.

The victim taking a settlement rather than dragging it out in court and having everyone know her name doesn't mean folks shouldn't be asking questions about hockey Canada or individual players.

Yeah, if I'm an NHL team hearing about this for the first time this year I have questions.

Unfortunately I think that this happens at every level of hockey.

If the victim will not testify / proceed how do you suggest the league ban players from ever playing again ? On rumours and emotion ?

Do an investigation?

Clearly they know who was involved?

And what exactly do you think an investigation will look like without the victim involved? And how long until her name and the players names leak? What a ####storm that’d be.
