These are guys that other than their age Tofolli, Backlund and Coleman would be easy to trade for value based on 2022-23.
The only guys on this list that are signed past next season are Coleman and Andersson
It would seem that having 7 players that are playing close to their potential does not suggest that there is a general failure of the coaching staff.

I’d add Zadorov to your list.

Looks like Sutter wasn’t the problem last night. That’s the style he has been preaching all season due to the lack of legit offensive forwards. The Flames are finally getting some goaltending and along with that some results.

Bad choice but in all fairness he nearly scored. Kadri and Backlund didn’t have great opportunities on net.

At the end of the day, I think the game of hockey has pretty much evolved past the Sutter’s and Tortorella’s of the world. Both of these guys can get a lot out players. They both have given us hockey fans memorable quotes and entertaining press conferences. But when they lose a room, it gets ugly. When they refuse to adjust, it gets even worse. This season has been a prime example of that. Have tons of respect for the great things Sutter has done for the Flames org, but it’s time to move on

Huberdeau playing on the PP with Kadri, Ritchie, Hanifin, and Weegar is criminal.
Guy with the 3 most PP points in the league in the three seasons prior to this one plays on the second unit with no finishers.
Just idiotic player management by the coaching staff.

Honestly. It’s hard to tell what the root problem is on this team.
- shakey goaltending was a consistent issue
- weak powerplay was a consistent issue
- lack of finish was a consistent issue
- huge defensive breakdowns was a consistent issue.
Doesn’t seem like many areas weren’t issues fairly consistently. Forwards, defence, goalies, coaches.
Team effort.

This is beyond silly
Toffoli’s increase of 15 points with increased role isn’t a good tradeoff for Huberdeau shaving 115 points down to 55
That’s not a coaching win, my friend

Sigh...there are a few reasons that Canada has a 30+yr dry spell going for a cup. Bagging out a hall of fame coach when the underlying defensive metrics say otherwise is as Canadian as snow on May long weekend.
15 more goals from Huberdeau / Mangiapane and 15 more stops from Markstrom and this team is easily in the playoffs.
They've got centre depth...defensive depth and what was once a top goalie.
Its sports, sometimes it doesn't go your way, but one of the ONLY natural advantages Calgary has at the moment is that there is a top coach that lives 2.5hrs away and feels he owes the city / franchise something.
Why are we throwing our one advantage away?

I think not enough conversation of how bad the assistant coaches (including goalie coach too). Have the gut the entire staff.

Agreed. Powerplay was abysmal and the organization has been making NHL goaltenders worse for a decade now.

I don't understand how the organization has been so content with keeping Sigalet?
Has there been ANY goaltender that has improved while with the Flames since Kipper? If there's one thing that needs to be completely gutted out, it the goaltending department.

I think Talbot was able to maintain typical Talbot play for the 26 games he started but he wasn't with the Flames long enough to get saturated in the stink.

I believe in the Jays.

The timing is perfect to give Mitch Love a shot. Despite how miserable this season was, this is still a roster that is built to win, and a bounce back season is fairly likely for many of these players. It would be a good scenario for a young coach to walk into. It would also be nice to have a guy who is confident in Wolf as he gets his shot in the NHL.

I hate the blame the goalie coach stuff. Its not like any of these goalies go elsewhere and turn into gold. Maybe they just aren't that good (or in the case of Markstrom - old and past their prime)

My take on Sutter is - he is a good coach but he needs to adapt to trust younger players. You just need some youthful energy on every team. You can't be a middling team and just keep rolling out a bunch of late 20/30 year olds on the 4th line and hope that everything magically gets better. We lost Valimaki for nothing because Sutter wouldn't trust him to be a 6th d-man instead using no upside guys like McKay or Michael Stone or whoever. We'll lose Phillips for nothing this off-season because Sutter won't trust him to play even enough games to see if he has anything at the NHL level.

15 more goals from 2 guys or the 15 saves from Markstrom would have surely helped....But to me, the coaching is still the #1 problem. 17 OT/SO losses? Over 20 losses when outshooting your opponents by more than 10? Those issues are at the crux of the problem, and land squarely on the coaching staff, albeit ably assisted by the goalies for the second one. But even that is a coaching issue, or at the very least, competent goalie coaching/management would have mitigated the damage.
Correct either of those problems by even 10%, and they make the playoffs.

If we simply assume that Sigalet is a cheapest goalie coach in the league, it suddenly makes sense.

Yes - changing the coaches will surely solve the problem.
