Default 2024 NFL Offseason

Can probably separate this out from the playoffs thread now that the Browns, Texans, and Cowboys (LMAO) are done.

I'm wondering if the Cowboys look at moving Dak this offseason and doing a mini-rebuild. His value is probably the highest it's ever going to be at this point, but I don't see how you can give him an extension if you're Dallas.

Atlanta seems like an obvious destination for him. That team is loaded with offensive talent and just need a decent QB and coach.

Jerry loves his boys and will keep doubling down on them. Dak's going to be there for another season at least. If the Bears decide to pick a QB and trade Fields I would think Atlanta is the perfect landing spot. If Champ Kelly remains on as Raiders GM watch for the Raiders to be interested in Fields unfortunately as Kelly was part of the braintrust in Chicago that drafted him.

Dak has a no-trade clause and the Cowboys would eat a massive dead cap hit to move him without a sign and trade. So unless he seriously wants out he will be the Cowboys QB next year and probably for a few more years after that. It'd be fascinating to see what a Dak trade market would even look like. There's ample evidence he's not a Super Bowl caliber QB, but QB desperation as it is I could see him netting two firsts +.

Designating it a post-June 1st trade would solve the cap hit issue.

But who is gonna wait until after June 1 to make that trade? Post FA, post draft, no mini camp or OTA's....Dak is basically a lock to be the Cowboys QB, unless they really wanna go nuclear and just outright cut him and go full rebuild.

AFAIK, you don't have to wait until after June 1st to make the trade. You just designate the trade as a post-June 1st trade. It means the Cowboys don't get the cap-relief until June 1st, but Dak can still join a new team and participate in offseason activities.

That only works for cuts, trades require it to happen on June 2. So would have to be a sign-and-trade to restructure the money for the Cowboys to avoid the cap hit.

Quote:
The final thing is that there is no such thing as a post June 1 trade designation. The Packers can not trade Aaron Rodgers in March and declare it a post June 1 trade to break up the salary cap charges across the 2023 and 2024 league years. If Green Bay needed to split the cost (Rodgers costs more on the cap to trade than keep) they would have to find a team willing to delay processing any trade for Rodgers until June 2nd. If they trade him before that date there is no other option but to take all of the dead money in 2023.

Harbaugh wants full control. Its why he got undermined in SF, as York didn't like the power he had and wanted more of...so they got some no name rat Tomasula to get dirt on him and his reward was the coaching job for one year.

SF greatly overachieved with SF. SF players would run through a wall for him, and again, the SF executive didn't much like that. As soon. As he left, instantly Kaepernick became below average, Also Smith got into off field issues and the team was cooked.

He had resources though in SF and power for a while. Will Spanos give him the resources? He may give him the power.
Harbaugh himself is a bit of an odd duck and somewhat awkward and stubborn, so that also doesn't play well.

Just like Belichek, GMs and team executives would have to deal with an ego that's bigger their own, and concede some control to they coach.
Makes it tough. Jones really give up control in Dallas? Tennessee's owner had issues with Vrabel and his Patriots induction. Even Seattle has John Schneider (who's been quiet since his partner in crime was told to leave the building)and an owner ('s daughter) who overruled the stability and energy of Pete Carroll.

Back to Harbaugh, he had that control at Michigan and it will be even harder to get the same level he had in SF now 6 years later in the NFL.

I'm hoping they at least kick the tires on Slowek, but I'll take any aggressive coach who knows how to scheme and run a modern NFL offense.

I wonder if they want an experienced coach this time. Vrabel? Then get a OC?

Obviously not a shock after how emotional he was at the end of the game. He'll have tons of media opportunities for sure, in addition to being a first ballot HOFer.

Sirianni first got into the NFL on Todd Haley's staff in K.C. so I can see where the fake tough guy mantra comes from. After 2 seasons the Chiefs players had their fill of Haley and weren't going to play for him. When he had Charlie Weiss to run his offence it was functional. When he went back to college it was a disaster.

Seeing a few parallels between Haley and Sirianni. Don't know if he'll be removed, but with how the season ended, it's more likely than I would have thought two weeks ago.

The issue with that is then you have to find a good offensive coordinator. First, good offensive coordinators are difficult to find. Second, if they're really good, they tend to get hired away and then you run into the issues the Eagles have had under their last two head coaches.

Also, I'm really not sure what Vrabel brings to the table that Sirianni doesn't. He's has back to back losing seasons and, for a supposed defensive coach, has generally overseen pretty bad defenses. Other than two outlier seasons, his defenses have ranked in the middle or bottom half of the league, and that's with coaching in a historically weak division.

It's why owners have started to prefer hiring OC's for head coaches as regardless of coordinator movement, the offense will remain in place.
