Smith was also terrible in last year's preseason. I'm less worried now than I was a year ago. Although I'd prefer if he was just lights out right off the bat.

Flames already showing that they can play with pace and generate rush opportunities to an extent they never did under Gulutzan.
Good retrievals and first passes from the D to forwards in motion and with good support. Not nearly as much button-hooking and slowing down at the offensive blue line. . . .
Set aside some uninspired play from some veterans, and, big picture, I'm really liking what I'm seeing ( except for goaltending )

Huh? That was a really strong game from Ryan Jankowski. He really brought it every shift and if he keeps playing like that he should be our 2nd line center with Tkachuk Czarni, pushing Backs down to 3rd line with Frolik

True, he's definitely looked rusty. However, the guy has barely played though. What's it been, 2 games with him in net so far?
I'd say it's time for the Flames to trim down the roster so the regular squad can find their groove. I'd maybe rest Smith tomorrow, let him get a couple of good practices in, and then give him the final 2 preseason games to work off the remaining rust. Then they'll have 3 days off for him to get mentally prepared for Oct. 3rd.

I agree with Peter Loubardias. Mangiapane was great tonight. Dube was also good though. For me, its between those two for the 4th line LW position. I'm really happy those two are playing well in competing for a spot.

It's hard to believe, after what 7 preseason games? That there are only 3 games left.

Also, Flames are truly blessed with the blue line depth they've put together. Brodie-Gio, Hanifin-Hamonic all legit top 4, Stone a solid 5-6, and Andersson, Valimaki, and (to a slightly lesser extent Kyllington) all looking NHL ready and all with top 4 potential
That aspect of the team, at least, should be solid for a decade or more

I’m not to worried about Smith. Last pre season he looked very shakey, but once the season started his play was solid.
Just like most veterans, you can’t put much stock into preseason when judging their play.
If Smith has a shakey first few games to start the season, then I’ll begin to worry

This guy has been trolling and beating this drum all camp, I hope the mods take notice. It’s getting ridiculous.

I didn't think he played bad. Just thought he was quiet to often. He still had some strong plays just want to see a little more one a shift to shift basis.

Very worried about smith. If he starts first 20 games like he played last 20 last year we are in trouble and probably out of it before christmas

Smith looked awful last year in preseason as well then ended up fine.
edit: looks like someone made this point already

I wouldn’t call a .916 Sv% fine... I’d call that below average
I just don’t think we can expect first half smith to stick around for a full year this year. Really not confident putting all the eggs in that basket

I thought Jankowski had a great game. He won so many board battles and does lots of little things right.
I thought Mangiapane played great, but my ongoing problem with him is that he can't seem to bury his chances. He had a few glorious chances tonight, including a 5 alermer in the 3rd when they really needed it, but nothing. Then Giordano gets one chance and shows everyone what burying it means.
Conversely, Dube, even though he makes mistakes, is more dynamic and can actually make things happen offensively.
I liked Hanifin's game tonight. And Ryan. I thought Andersson and Valimaki both looked good.
Not seeing enough from Foo to pencil him into the lineup.
I am not the least bit worried about Smith. The amount that people complain about vets, every pre-season, just astounds me.

I agree, but it's it's general tough to expect consistently good numbers on a year-to-year basis. Price has had many down years. So have Rinne and Quick.
The only goalies who consistently hover at or around 92% are Gibson and Luongo. Brobovsky and Holtby are usually around there too, but they've both had their off years since 2016. Rask is quite consistent, but he isn't putting up 92+% like he used to.
The best thing a team can do is to have good forward/defensive depth. Goaltending depth helps too.

He is probably an oilers fan and will pass it off as joke. It's not out of the question that tolls will try get fans to dislike thier own players.

I think Smith’s numbers took a hit after he tried to come back after his injury. He was pretty bad post injury, and he mentioned that he tried to comeback a bit early and drag the team into the playoffs. Clearly he wasn’t ready to come back
