Default The Last Jedi Spoiler thread

Lets put all spoilerish stuff in here and keep the other thread clean.

Also be really careful in opening anything about the Last Jedi, I received a email from a friend of mine, and it contained some fairly large spoilers at the bottom of it that were maybe unintentional.

Also it might be really smart to avoid places like Reddit for the next few days.

The opening crawl text. Minor spoiler. Seems to be verified. Very ESB-ish in terms of setup.

NSFW!

I won't be seeing this until it comes out on Shaw, so I went and read a bunch of spoilers.

That was quite good! Overall really pleased with the path they took. It has echos of Empire, hits similar beats, but does it in its own way and doing its own thing. Doesn't leave it hanging, and really it's wide open where it could go next.

Good focus on the characters, the Star Wars loreists aren't going to be happy, Rey isn't anyone, Snoke isn't anyone (kind of disappointed that he ends up being a throwaway character). I was hoping they'd dig more into the light vs dark and moving on from the Jedi order, but I guess you can't really expect that.

The Finn/Rose subplot could have been cut entirely IMO, that was about the only part where I felt the movie dragged somewhat.

Glad to see someone finally use the jump to light speed as a weapon, I've only been wanting that since forever, that was extremely cool.

Luke was pretty cool, strong but flawed, can't be what they want, but does what he is able to.

Music was amazing of course.

Good movie, no idea what they'll do with the last one!

That was awesome.

Really enjoyed it.

I was concerned with the Ben - Ray hand holding scenes but they were really well done.

I think the Finn Rose scenes were done as a way to show the dichotomy elsewhere in the galaxy between the Man and the regular Joe's. That casino scene with all the characters? Lots of fun.

Took my 8 year old to the double feature with Force Awakens. She really liked those scenes with Chewbacca and the things he wanted to eat. She also liked how Supreme Leader got his. She really seemed to enjoy the hooting and hollering in the theater, the clapping, the atmosphere. Great fun.

Just got out. Wow, major disappointment after the strong start in Force Awakens. Will update more in depth later...

A lot of highs and lows. What works, works well, and what doesn't detracts from the whole, which is disappointing.

But overall, a lot more positive than negative, for me.

The Best : yoda scene. That felt like Star Wars in a way that the Force Awakens didn't. The Kylo Ren story arc is giving some extra depth to Vader, which I didn't expect. And Rei's parents being nobody was a nice touch.

The Worst : Another superhero janitor. They have 6 hours to save the Alliance, and they jaunt off to another planet for a side quest. When everybody in the universe flies as well as Han Solo, it takes away the tension.

Funniest : they killed Porkins again.

And those are my immediate spoilers. I'm glad the story wasn't another straight rehash.

Why would Starships take literal hours to chase each other? Just hyperspace away and then back to where you want to be. Or just call in reinforcements to surround or cut them off. And run off to a casino during this slow hours long chase?

Space bombers are bad. You had B-wings. And bombs in space need to drop like WWII?

Snoke was a nobody that came, was a baddie and then left.

Meanwhile, the silent hyperspace suicide mission was cool. But why wouldn't you do that sooner? Too "terroristy"?

EDIT: All that being said, I enjoyed it as much as I like to have more Star Wars movies. But they almost seemed to search online for people's expectations and then just do the opposite.

I’m a bit mixed on it. Lots of good but a fair bit of disappointment as well. They teased way to much that Rey had an important parent then nothing. I don’t care if she comes from gutter trash but enough of the teasing. And Snoke was gone way too easy. I’ll probably like it a lot more in a second viewing. The casino scene was a bit too much cgi and was giving me a Lucas phantom menace feel and I thinking too much Disney influence. And Leia in space? That was really dumb.

The worst was CGI Princess Leia getting blown out into space and then using the force the fly back to her ship.

I've presented that as the "dumbest sounding spoiler that everyone would think was made up until they see the movie".

Just got out really enjoyed it, especially the last hour or so was crazy. First scene I was eye rolling hard with the humor and a few parts it felt forced. 3 major things fans were debating turned out to be meaningless (who are Rey's parents, who is Snoke and what will Luke first say to Rey and/or Leia). My favorite thing was how beautiful this movie was. So many scenes felt like a comic book they were framed amazingly. The Snoke room was fantastic. I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan in the world but I'm leaving thoroughly entertained.

We don't know yet if the question of Rey's parents has been answered. Kylo was trying to manipulate her there. He could have easily seen what her worst fear was, and then used that to try and bring her over to his side. I think they left themselves enough wiggle room there to still use the question as a plot point.

Just getting home...I have to digest this...but it’s unsettling how much I hated that movie.

I love all Star Wars movies, except for Episode VIII.

...I live in a world where I hate a Star Wars movie. I am literally dumbfounded.

just got back from the theater

i really liked it - especially how it picked up right where ep7 ended

some of the ships were "woooooow!"

i liked that snoke got chopped in half and rey's parents are nobodies

do you think phasma is actually dead this time??

it will be interesting to see what they do with leia in ep9.

Thought it was good but not great. Think I liked Force Awakens better.

One that I think the diehard fans of the series won’t like as much as the general public. Fans of the series want the history to be present and on the forefront. So not having Snoke be important with a back story, and not revealing Rey’s parents as a “Skywalker or Kenobi” means that it breaks that history.

For me personally there were just some parts that dragged on and they didn’t leave enough (any?) sort of cliffhanger at the end. Could go anywhere from here and I feel like a bit more suspense at the end would have helped it all.

For me the tone at the end of that movie felt like the end of an arc - which is maybe what they wanted with Luke/Hans dead and Carrie gone in real life. Would not be surprised at all if Carrie’s death gets mentioned in the scroll of 9 and it starts with her funeral.

Yeah I feel like she should have died there - would have added a lot to Kylo’s arc since he couldn’t pull the trigger.

Really she didn’t have a huge purpose after that and felt like they kept her around just for the on screen reunion with Luke.

So, generally if the Rose character was edited to only the first appearance, Leia died in space, and they gave a Star Trek technocrap reason for the slow-mo chase, it would have been a much better movie.

If they integrated the Del Toro character a little less side questy, and built him into more of an integral character. Like they never went to a casino, found out that Del Toro was imprisoned on the carrier, and then had their mini-heist movie, where the heist fails. Del Toro sells them out, carry on.

It feels like some very strong parts are being drowned in bombast.

I am not pleased. Hate is a strong word, and I didn't hate the movie. But I am definitely more than just underwhelmed. I'll have a sleep but my initial thoughts about the bad stuff because I need to vent:

Too much time on Finn and Rose for what was a pretty inconsequential storyline.

Not enough time on the Luke/Rey and Kylo/Rey storylines. Some really, really good stuff there that was rushed. It was right there, and more focus on that could have turned the movie into something really special. But wasn't given enough time to really carry the movie.

A lot of jumping around for a movie that had only two spheres of action for most of it. Another problem of the Finn/Rose storyline.

Snoke it turns out isn't really a big deal or a main plotline. We didn't learn anything about him, what he learned doesn't matter. A whole lot of 'meh' there.

But the worst thing I've ever seen in any Star Wars movie has got to be Leia force flying through space back to the ship. I was completely dumbfounded when that happened.

That's exactly what I was thinking during that scene as well. Definitely seemed like he was just toying with her emotions there just to get her to turn dark.

As for the rest of the movie, I really enjoyed it. It certainly had a few scenes that mirrored both Empire and Jedi a little bit, but overall I thought the writing was more original than VII, and I liked the new characters, planets, and creatures. I hope we'll be seeing more of Benicio Del Toro's character in the next movie, as I though his part was way too brief for an actor of that caliber.

The casino sequence was a lot of fun.

The lightspeed suicide attack was badass.

Leia using the force to get back to her ship after being blown out into space was beyond ridiculous, even for a Star Wars flick. That was the only scene that bugged me.

I loved what they did with Luke's story arc, and the Yoda scene was great. That scene was easily the most Star Wars-ey thing in the movie and I thought it worked great. And is it just me, or did they actually use a puppet for yoda? Sure looked that way.

John Williams' score was fantastic as always.

Not sure how I feel yet about Snoke's unexpected early death. Sure, I guess Kylo needed to kill him in order to completely turn dark and carry on Grandpa Vader's legacy. But I was hoping to get more of a back story on him.

Cut out the casino planet, give more screentime to snoke, rey and kylo in the same room (way too interesting to have rushed to snokes death), and some attention given to the formation of the knights of ren which i assume immediately followed kylo overthrowing luke so that we know what the hell they were all about and this could've been a slam dunk film.

Puppet Yoda had me grinning ear to ear for its entirety. The non action highlight of the movie for sure.

Kylo and Finns characters were vastly improved this time. Ren came across as much less of a child and Finn was less clueless. I'll have more thoughts later.
